Andrea Shaw Talks 2024 Mentality, Physique Progress, and Posing Goals

Cold and calculated, Shaw made it clear that everyone was a threat to her future success, including herself.

“Everybody is a threat, everyone is a threat,” said Shaw. “Everyone, including the Andrea that was on stage in 2023.”

According to Shaw, the earlier she starts prepping in 2024, the better.

“Again, that feedback I got right on it I’m looking at Cydney and I’m like we got to practice this, we got so many weeks to do that. The more I continue to do this and the more time I build in with Cydney especially while I’m traveling.

That’s the number one reason why I’m starting earlier because I know what kind of travel I have ahead of me for the year. The earlier I start the more prepared I’m going to be, which means the more confident I’m going to be,” shared Andrea Shaw.
One focal point of Shaw’s prep will be refining her posing routines.
“Just to make sure I’m dialing in on the things I need to dial in on, that’s one of them. Making sure I continue to open my body up.

Or like one of our retired female bodybuilders says, Margie, she says pose big. So I think that if you have enough size you can pose maybe a little more closed off. Then, if you are, maybe in need of a little more size you can pose a little bit bigger.”

“If you got certain parts that are bigger, certain parts on how you pose it, that determines what you display.”
Aside from posing work, Shaw believes her lower body, specifically the symmetry of her hamstrings, calves, and quads will play a role in her future success.

“Well, I won’t say continue to change but I continue to improve. Obviously, the basics are symmetry right? Make sure that the waist is small, make sure the posterior, obviously, I never have problems with my upper body but making sure my hamstrings are dialed in, calves are dialed in, quads are sharp, and making sure my posing is on point. Those are my top things. I know where my strengths are and I know where my areas of improvement are. But definitely working on that lower body and the posing.”
Shaw briefly looked back on her latest Ms. Olympia victory, stressing that she remains hyper-critical of her body from prejudging until the finals conclude.

“That was real good, [the final pose-down at 2023 Ms. Olympia],” said Shaw. “I feel like okay, I believed I got it, but you know. Did I stay tight enough during intermission or did I make sure that I didn’t eat too much, didn’t have any spill-over because I’m really critical of how I handled that time in between pre-judging and finals.”
Even though Shaw usually keeps her head down when she’s not on the verge of competing, the bodybuilding champion has kept a more visible public profile as of late. She recently joined Ron Harris for a candid discussion about her career, where she underlined that recovery practices have become essential to her consistency on stage.

The 2024 Mr. Olympia competition will celebrate its 60th anniversary from October 10-13 in Las Vegas, Nevada, inside the Resort World’s Las Vegas Convention Center, where Andrea Shaw will aim to make it five straight titles.
