Choosing the Right Bodybuilding Division
Picking the right division is one of the most important decisions a competitive bodybuilder can make. Competing in the wrong division means your physique is being judged against criteria that do not favor your natural strengths, leading to poor placements regardless of your conditioning.
For men, the main divisions are Open Bodybuilding (no weight limits, maximum size), Classic Physique (height-based weight caps, golden-era aesthetics), 212 (maximum 212 lbs, extreme conditioning), and Men's Physique (V-taper focused, board shorts). Classic Physique has become the fastest-growing division thanks to its emphasis on symmetry and proportions over sheer mass.
For women, Bikini is the most popular division emphasizing a toned, balanced look. Figure adds more muscularity, Wellness rewards a stronger lower body, Women's Physique requires significant muscularity, and Fitness combines physique judging with an athletic routine.
Frequently Asked Questions
Classic Physique has height-based weight caps set by the IFBB Pro League. For example: 5'7" (67 in) = 192 lbs, 5'8" (68 in) = 197 lbs, 5'9" (69 in) = 204 lbs, 5'10" (70 in) = 212 lbs, 5'11" (71 in) = 219 lbs, 6'0" (72 in) = 227 lbs, 6'1" (73 in) = 234 lbs, 6'2" (74 in) = 242 lbs. These are maximum on-stage weights for a measured height. The full published table is on the Classic Physique division page.
Yes, many athletes cross over between divisions. Common crossovers include Classic Physique to Open, Bikini to Wellness, and Figure to Women's Physique. Some athletes compete in two divisions at the same show, though this requires meeting the criteria for both. Cross-over athletes like Derek Lunsford (212 to Open) have found success switching divisions.
Your skeletal structure plays a significant role. Narrow-framed athletes (small joints, thin wrists) tend to look more aesthetic and may suit Men's Physique or Bikini. Wide-framed athletes (thick bones, broad shoulders) can fill out divisions like Open or Women's Physique. Medium frames are versatile and often do well in Classic Physique or Figure.
If you exceed the Classic Physique weight cap for your height, you have three options: diet down to meet the weight limit (common during contest prep), compete in Open Bodybuilding where there are no weight limits, or compete in 212 if you are under that weight limit. Many athletes successfully cut water weight to make the Classic cap.
