Calories Burned Skateboarding Calculator

Find calories burned during the skateboarding activity

Written by Tom Miller, CSCS

Last Updated on8 July, 2022 | 11:52 PM EDT

Ask Question?

Skateboarding is a sport and popular recreational physical activity.  Skateboarding burns about 350-575 calories each hour for the average person.

You can use this calculator to calculate how many calories are burned while skateboarding competitively with vigorous effort and leisurely with moderate effort. The number of calories burned doing this exercise depends on your muscle mass, body fat percentage, age, sex, body weight, and many other factors other than your effort.

Generally how many calories you burn depends on the weight you are and the effort you put into it. The more you weigh and the more effort put in, the more calories you will burn regardless. The numbers given on this calculator are an estimate and do not count for the factors I listed above.

How to calculate the calories burned skateboarding

The calculator uses MET values to calculate how many calories a person would burn skateboarding. MET values are values given to activities that determine their caloric expenditure. Skateboarding has a MET value of 5 for moderate effort skateboarding activities and a MET of 6 for competitive skateboarding activities.

The MET value of the activity along with your weight and time spent doing the activity will be used to calculate calorie expenditure to give you the approximate number of calories burned while skateboarding.

How to use the calculator?

  • Choose the unit of measurement – Kilograms or Pounds
  • Enter your weight and time spent skateboarding
  • Choose skateboarding activity (General/Competitive)
  • Hit Calculate

Once you hit calculate, you will be presented with the total calories burned while skateboarding competitively and non-competitively during the amount of time you spent doing it.

Formula

  • Calories burned each minute = (MET x bodyweight (in kilograms) x 3.5(oxygen used by muscles per minute)) / 200
  • Calories burned per hour = calories burned each minute x 60 (minutes)

MET is a value that measures the energy expenditure of an activity for a period of time.

An activity with 1 MET is equal (roughly ) to the energy expenditure of someone inactive and not digesting.

An activity with a MET of 12 uses 12 times the energy of a task with a MET of 1.

Example

A person weighing 200 pounds (kg) skateboarding competitively (MET value of 6) for an hour (60 minutes)

Calories burned each minute = (MET x bodyweight (in kilograms) x 3.5) / 200

Calories burned each minute skateboarding non-competitively = (5 x 90.7 x 3.5) / 200 = 7.94

Calories burned while skateboarding with moderate effort for an hour = 7.94 x 60 = 476

What is skateboarding?

Skateboarder

Skateboarding is a sport and a recreational activity. It consists of doing movements and tricks on a skateboard. Skateboards are simply long thin pieces of wood with wheels that allow them to do tricks on a rail or corner of an object. Skateboarding can be very intense and fun but also has a risk of injury since you can fall from great heights, or land in awkward positions.

Tricks and riding on a skateboard are very intensive on the core, especially for a long duration, and it is a great workout for the muscles of the legs and has many benefits along with being good cardio. It is a good physical activity to lose weight and to maintain weight.

It is also good at burning calories, compared to walking, jogging, and running, it can be a fun way to burn many calories and get in some exercising.

Is skateboarding good for weight loss?

Athletic Girl With Abs

Skateboarding is great for losing weight. It is very intensive cardio compared to other exercises and can be done on a regular basis for fun. You can ride anywhere with a skateboard just like you would a bike, so you can burn calories on your way to any location, giving you a boost to your journey to lose weight.

Any exercise helps to burn calories and lose weight, but diet is just as important for your overall health, which has a direct effect on weight loss and things like preventing obesity, heart disease, osteoporosis, and diabetes. Skateboarding is a great exercise to do just that when paired with diet.

Conclusion

Skateboarding is a great recreational sport that is good at burning calories and burning fat. It is also very trick-oriented, turning into a culture that lives strong in the young. You can burn about 350-575 calories each hour skateboarding, more calories if you skate aggressively.

This is great to get the health benefits to benefit your life and lose a couple pounds or maintain your body weight. The calories burned depend on how much you weigh, and many external factors, but mostly it depends on how much effort you put in.

Use this site as a tool to get to better health, improve your training and body, and to be on your way to your goal!
