Chris Aceto Discusses Training ‘Monstrous Big’ Jay Cutler on ‘Low Protein’ and ‘1,000 Carbs’

Aceto opened up on Cutler's nutrition early in his career: "He never ate a ton of protein. It wasn’t a ton for the amount of mass that he was carrying."

A decade following his retirement, Jay Cutler remains one of the most talked-about bodybuilders on the planet. In a recent IFBB AMA YouTube video, Chris Aceto discussed his first impressions of coaching Cutler at 18 years old. In addition, he revealed in 2002/2003, Cutler had to lie about his contest preps because nobody believed his carbohydrate intake.

Emerging as a mass monster in the early 2000s, Jay Cutler paid his dues before reaching the sport’s highest throne. After a handful of second-place finishes to Ronnie Coleman, Cutler finally dethroned ‘The King’ in 2006, thanks to the conditioning and completeness of his physique. Having looked back on one of the sport’s best rivalries, Cutler admits he had to ‘separate himself from society’ to catch up to Coleman.

Chris Aceto, who trained Cutler and offered him a nutrition plan at 18, can remember the rapid progress he made after receiving guidance. As one of the most respected coaches in the industry, Aceto looked back on training a young Jay Cutler and opened up on his staggering carb intake in the lead-up to a bodybuilding show.

Chris Aceto on Jay Cutler’s Protein & Carbs: “He Used to Have to Lie About His Contest Prep”

Chris Aceto compared Jay Cutler’s mindset at 18 to boxing legend Mike Tyson‘s.

“I’ll tell you this I called Jay yesterday because I watched the Patrick Bet-David interview with Mike Tyson. And Mike Tyson said, ‘You have to have the mindset to be champion.’ He asked him when did you have the mindset, ‘I had the mindset at 14.’

And Jay had the right right right mindset from the get-go but I feel like I’ve pidgeon-holded him into no choice but becoming Mr. Olympia. Because I told him and I told him and I told him and people know when I get behind them it’s not me talking, it’s just factual,” shared Chris Aceto.

Having mentored Cutler at 18 years old, Aceto knew then he was a future Mr. Olympia.

“It’s not about me, it’s about, Jay you could go all the way. And that was at an early age. I met down and met with him in Western Mass when he was 18. You know, he was big, he was just like moving weight, you know just like any 18-year-old training.”

Aceto created a diet plan for Cutler when they started working together. Within months, Aceto was blown away by Cutler’s progress, especially because he knew he wasn’t taking anabolics.

I put together diet and training, training and diet, I know diet for sure, a plan, and then I went back I don’t know he could tell you he has the best memory in bodybuilding. I went back three or four months later and I was like ‘Wow.’

Because I knew 100% sure he was not using anabolics but back then I was like ‘Wow. That was quick.’ thinking to myself. That’s when I started telling him he could go all the way.”

In 2002 and 2003, Aceto explained that Cutler’s calories were so high that he was forced to lie about his carbohydrate intake.

“Yeah he wasn’t eating a ton in the early like he never ate a ton of protein. It wasn’t a ton for the amount of mass that he was carrying.

His calories were higher than most people. You know not most people, probably… there was a point where, he’ll tell you this, where he used to have to lie about his contest prep because nobody believed it.”

According to Aceto, Cutler was prepping with 1,000 carbs in the days leading up to a contest.

“They would say what are you doing, he would just say I’m doing 150 carbs and it shut people up.

Because at one point, between after 2000, he had a run from like running into the Olympia into 2002, 2003, where he was just monstrous big, where you know he’d prep on a 1,000 carbs,” Aceto explains.

Since stepping away from the stage, Jay Cutler has been open about the nutritional demands of a four-time Mr. Olympia. He revealed that he would buy an entire cow at a time from his local butcher, 30 dozen eggs, and 150 pounds of chicken. Cutler disclosed that at the height of his bodybuilding career, he was spending $50,000 a year on food.

Even today, Cutler remains committed to physical excellence and health. He recently completed a successful ‘Fit-for-50’ challenge that saw him transform his physique.
