After years of competing against the best, health, longevity, and wellness have become top priorities for Chris Bumstead. In a recent Instagram post by Dr. Khan, it was revealed that Bumstead underwent a renal artery injection of stem cells directly into his kidneys as a preventive health measure.
“We’re going directly into the renal artery and injecting exosomes and stem cells,” Dr. Khan told Bumstead.
Suffering from an autoimmune disease called IGF Neuropathy, Bumstead has battled against adversity for his entire bodybuilding career. Taking the Classic Physique Olympia throne in 2019, Bumstead’s stature, muscle quality, and posing expertise have turned him into a fitness star. Boasting five championships, Bumstead continues to set the bar as high as possible as the leader of Classic Physique.
In 2022, Bumstead fought through a bicep tear for gold. While he thought his road to glory would be smoother this year, Bumstead still faced considerable challenges before claiming a fifth title. He got the job done in Orlando, Florida, but ‘CBum’ revealed that he almost pulled out of the event due to a lat tear. With time to recover after his latest victory, Bumstead traveled to Dubai for a special operation.

Chris Bumstead Undergoes Preventative Stem Cell Operation with Dr. Khan and Dr. Shaw
Bumstead described the experience as “easy,” stressing that his past treatments were more challenging.
“I feel good that was easy,” said Bumstead. “It was harder to get it in my knees. Going under my patella was a little hard but that was nothing.”
Dr. Khan called the preventative procedure “relatively simple” and a “one-time thing.”
“For Chris, it’s not like he has chronic kidney disease, he’s not even really close to that but he wants to prevent it from his mild dysfunction getting worse. Instead of just saying let’s watch and wait and see if it gets worse, this is a preventative thing and it’s a relatively simple procedure and it’s a one-time thing and it can have a huge impact on reversing the mile damage and getting back to normal function,” said Dr. Khan.
As for a recovery period, Dr. Shaw specified that four hours is sufficient for Bumstead’s operation.
“They[Patients] rest for usually two hours afterward, and then they’ll be watched for two hours total,” added Dr. Shaw.
Below, you can find Dr. Khan’s overview of Bumstead’s stem cell treatment:
“This is the next holy grail of regenerative kidneys.” @cbum
It was my second time working with the 5x Classic Physique Olympia winner Chris Bumstead here in Dubai. Our team did a renal artery injection of stem cells directly into Chris’ kidneys to help prevent his mild dysfunction from getting worse. To perform at the level Chris does is something I truly admire. But even worldwide champions need help sometimes. Regenerative medicine is changing the game and I’m playing. Thank you Chris for allowing us to share your story. Can’t wait to share your progress!
Here’s an up close look at the procedure.” Dr. Khan wrote.
Dr. Khan has also worked with other top-tier bodybuilders like former eight-time Mr. Olympia Ronnie Coleman and former titleholder Mamdouh ‘Big Ramy’ Elssbiay. Both men have received stem cell treatments and credit the procedure for steady improvements to their health and well-being.
As the most hunted man in the Classic Physique category, fans and bodybuilders alike have questions about ‘Cbum’s’ future. Bumstead and his wife Courtney King revealed they are expecting a baby in 2024. Judging by a recent interview he took part in, it appears Bumstead plans to go after a sixth title next October.
So, to be clear: in order to win an Olympia level competition these days, even in the less extreme divisions, one must be willing to take “supplements” to such an extreme as to endanger their health and require corrective therapeutic stem cell treatments for vital organs after competition? Oh, and inject SEOs to bring up lagging body parts. Oh, and have hair transplants to correct accelerated male pattern baldness brought on by excessive testosterone levels caused by abusing “supplements” ?
This sport is now so far removed from any “fitness” illusions people may have had when looking at a physique competitor, it deserves all of the derision and mocking directed towards it. Look at polygraphed and drug tested natural competitions for your realistic aspirations and celebrate your achievements you did not sacrifice your long term health and well being for.
