Jay Cutler and Mike O’Hearn boast unbelievable longevity in their fifties. On February 6, 2025, Cutler and O’Hearn discussed their need to exercise seven days a week. In addition, Cutler offered advice on workout frequency for those with less experience in the gym.

Jay Cutler understood the power of nutrition and exercise at a young age. He eventually found the sport of bodybuilding and thrived on stage. During his illustrious career, he managed to not only dethrone eight-time Mr. Olympia Ronnie Coleman but earned four Sandow trophies in his prime.

Although he’s long retired from competing, that hasn’t stopped him from maintaining an incredible physique. The same can be said for Mike O’Hearn who also led an impressive career as a bodybuilder, model, and fitness fanatic.

“We train seven days a week. I do actually it’s now 12 times a week because I do it twice a day. The point is we’ve got to a level of where we know how to recover from this. But that’s so not textbook in no world,” states O’Hearn.

Although this routine works for them, Cutler advises lifters to stick with a ‘three-on, one-off, two-on, one-off’ schedule.

“I still advise people to train on a three-on, one-off, two-on, one-off schedule. But I train seven days. I love it,” said Cutler.

O’Hearn asked Cutler how long would he adhere to a training routine that only involved four days a week.

“If I told you to stop it, I need you to do just textbook, train four days a week, with a day off in between if you’re fatigued, stay on your meal plan, how long would you last? How long mentally would you last?” asks O’Hearn.

The former four-time Mr. Olympia explained that he’d go insane because training has become ingrained in his day-to-day life.

“I’d go mentally insane. I started with the mental mindset that weight training put me in. When I got under that bar, or I was doing curls, my mind-muscle connection — the gym was my savior.”

With both men sporting next-level longevity into their fifties, there’s no denying that their intense workout schedules have helped them maintain their strength, youth, and sanity later in life. Cutler believes most lifters would benefit from a less intensive training regimen, though fitness is a different journey for everyone. As two of the most prolific names in bodybuilding, fans listen when Cutler and O’Hearn speak up.
