Jeff Cavaliere Shares The Best Approach to Building Strength As You Age

Cavaliere detailed how to effectively build strength and improve longevity as we get older.

Living longer and better is on top of Jeff Cavaliere’s list of priorities. In his latest endeavor, shared on June 27, 2025, he revealed how to build strength as you age using the unbreakable laws of longevity. 

“When we talk about strength, there’s a difference between just being strong and having the right type of strength to carry you through the rest of your life in a much more higher-quality way. We’re going to break down something we call the unbreakable laws of longevity and focusing mostly on strength.” 

Cavaliere’s reputation in the fitness sector is among the best. He’s been a long-time staple in the community, relaying science-based workout information with his growing subscriber count of over 14.1 million. As a former assistant strength and conditioning coach to the New York Mets, he’s developed strategies for helping individuals of differing age groups reach their full potential.

In the recent video, Cavalierre highlighted that there are two types of strength, relative and absolute.

“There’s two different types of strength: there’s relative strength and absolute strength. Absolute strength is your ability to simply move things in a better way than other people. You can move heavier objects more effectively than other people. Relative strength brings into play like 100 humans versus one gorilla.” 

He explained that a hierarchy of variables makes up the strength pyramid: strength, hypertrophy, power, S.A.Q. (speed, agility, quickness), and skill. 

“While strength is everything, it’s not the only thing. This is the difference when we’re talking about training for longevity and keeping your strength and building your strength, there’s only one way to do it,” he shared. “This is called the strength pyramid. 

At the bottom of everything we do is strength. It’s the base of support. How do we build as much strength as possible? What’s next, we talk about hypertrophy, that’s the building of muscle.” 

Power involves the ability to exert force faster, and the S.A.Q. refers mostly to running speed. 

“Next up the chain is something called power. Power, by definition, requires your ability to exert force but over a faster period of time. In other words, you can work quickly and explosively exert your power.” 

“Your S.A.Q., speed, agility, and quickness. It does benefit from strength,” he adds. “We’e talking about being fast, running speed.” 

The tip of the pyramid is skill, which typically comes last for individuals improving their fitness. However, Cavaliere emphasized that there should be a foundation under the pyramid for optimal longevity, which includes flexibility, mobility, and stability. 

“Skill work, now, we talk about the highest level of the pyramid,” he shared. “The only way to build real strength with an eye towards longevity is to make sure you’re focusing on this because your flexibility, mobility, and stability are the true foundation of where you want to focus is if you want to build lasting strength.”

In the past, Cavaliere broke down how to improve longevity with stretches. He revealed his top five moves for enhancing longevity and flexibility. All of the stretches can be performed without equipment other than the floor and a doorway. 

Living longer and stronger is something Cavaliere constantly pursues. He believes mobility, flexibility, and stability are the true foundation for building strength as we age.
