Fitness influencer Joey Swoll is on a mission to push back against the toxic gym culture and poor gym etiquette. In a recent TikTok video, Swoll reacted to a clip of a woman mocking a gym-goer who was grunting loudly while working out.
Social media giant TikTok has quickly emerged as the new launching pad for those looking to go viral. The short video-sharing app has helped push influencers into the limelight. However, one trend many find concerning is those who promote poor gym etiquette. This is something influencer Joey Swoll takes seriously in correcting.
Joey Swoll helps combat the toxic culture and encourages others to treat people with respect at gyms. In May, Swoll took issue with people refusing to listen to gym staff. As per Swoll, there is no reason why anybody should be treated differently regardless of their following or physique.
In another instance, a female TokToker made headlines for her aggressive attitude toward a gym worker. She called out the worker for allegedly staring at her as she stripped down to her sports bra. The associate defended himself and argued that no one was checking her out. Eventually, police were called to have her removed for trespassing and her membership was revoked.

Joey Swoll reacts to TikToker who mocked a gymgoer for being loud while working out
In a recent video posted on TikTok, Swoll shared his thoughts on a female TikToker who made fun of those at the gym getting in a much-needed workout.
“The only person you should not be like in this video is this young woman who’s recording somebody to post on social media to make fun of them and bash them,” Swoll said. “This is called training with intensity and if you ask me it goes pretty hand in hand with the music that’s being played in that gym.
Not everybody does this but for a lot of people that are passionate about training, maybe they are bodybuilders or simply gym rats. This is pretty common in most gyms.
I don’t want to get into the science of how grunting can help you control breathing as well as exhaling which helps you to exert more force. But what I find funny is that you’re a trainer.
You talk about creating a safe space for everyone yet you support comments like this calling this man pathetic and annoying.
Then you ask the question, who is he doing it for. Let me answer you, nobody, himself. My advice is that you put your headphones in, turn your music up and mind your own business. Be better than that.”

Incidents like these are unfortunately becoming more common. In June, a female TikToker flipped out at another gym-goer for leaving the squat rack he was using empty for a few minutes. Joey Swoll agreed the man should not have stepped away from the machine for such a long period of time but argued that it did not give the lady the right to berate him.

Last month, he discussed people posing without a shirt on the gym floor and how it can differ from place to place. Judging by his latest video, Swoll is continuing his goal of making gyms a place where all people feel welcome.
