HYROX Home Gym Equipment Guide

Build your home HYROX training setup without breaking the bank. Three budget tiers to match your commitment level.

Why Train HYROX at Home?

Most of us do not have access to a dedicated HYROX gym. Strategic equipment choices let you simulate all 8 HYROX stations with a fraction of that investment.

The key is understanding which equipment drives the most race impact. Sled work and rowing dominate the race experience. Build your home setup around the hard stations, and the rest falls into place.

Essential Tier ($500) - The Minimalist Setup

Start here if you are a first-timer testing commitment, training on a tight budget, or have extremely limited space.

What You Get
  • Sandbag (20-30 kg): Replaces weighted objects for lunges, carries, and general loading. A 25 kg sandbag costs $40-80.
  • Wall Ball (6-9 kg): Standard functional fitness tool. Budget $30-50.
  • Pair of Kettlebells (24 kg each): Dual-purpose for farmers carry simulation. Expect $80-150 per pair.
  • Jump Rope: Light cardio tool, $15-30. Bridges the gap between running segments.
  • Resistance Bands and Pull-up Bar: Optional but helpful for upper-body conditioning. $50-100 total.
Equipment Typical Cost Covers Stations
Sandbag (25 kg) $50-80 Station 7 (Lunges), partial Station 6 (Carry)
Wall Ball (9 kg) $35-50 Station 8 (Wall Balls)
Kettlebells (2x 24 kg) $120-150 Station 6 (Farmers Carry)
Jump Rope $20-30 Running simulation, conditioning
Resistance Bands + Pull-up Bar $50-100 Upper body conditioning
Total $275-410 Partial (3-4 of 8)

With the Essential tier, you can train sandbag lunges with proper load, practice wall ball movement and power, build farmers carry grip strength, and maintain cardiovascular fitness. Pair this with running and rowing at a local gym, and you have a functional entry-level program.

Pro tip: Start here, then upgrade incrementally. If you commit to 12 weeks of training with Essential gear and see results, invest in the sled and SkiErg.

Intermediate Tier ($2,000) - The Game Changer

Adding a single Concept2 machine transforms your training. Pick one based on your weakness.

Choose RowErg if: You struggle with back strength, want maximum cardio carryover, or prefer the lower-impact movement.

Choose SkiErg if: You are already strong at rowing, need more shoulder endurance, or want the harder movement. The SkiErg is the exact movement on the race course. For most HYROX athletes, SkiErg is the higher priority.

Equipment Cost Notes
All Essential Tier Items $500 Sandbag, wall ball, kettlebells, jump rope
Concept2 RowErg $890-990 Covers Station 5 (Rowing). Used models: $600-800
Concept2 SkiErg $1,000-1,060 Covers Station 1 (SkiErg). Used models: $700-900
Optional: Adjustable Dumbbells $300-500 Adds flexibility. Not essential but helpful.
Total (with RowErg) $1,400-1,500 Covers 6 of 8 stations
Total (with SkiErg) $1,500-1,560 Covers 6 of 8 stations

At Intermediate, you now cover 6 of the 8 HYROX stations directly. Most intermediate-tier athletes get very close to race pace on shorter simulations because they are missing only the most equipment-specific stations.

Buying Used Concept2 Machines: Both RowErg and SkiErg appear regularly on Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, and eBay. Concept2 machines are bulletproof and last decades. Budget 40-50% below retail for used machines in good condition, and factor in shipping ($150-300).

Pro tip: Before committing to Intermediate, test-drive a RowErg and SkiErg at a local gym. The machine you actually use beats the theoretically superior one sitting unused.

Complete Tier ($5,000) - Full HYROX Simulation

This is the fully equipped home HYROX gym. You replicate all 8 stations with precision, allow multiple people to train simultaneously, and can run full race simulations without any gaps. This tier is for serious competitors, gym owners, or athletes with dedicated training space.

Equipment Cost Replaces / Covers
All Intermediate Tier Items $1,500 Foundation: 6 stations
Concept2 RowErg + SkiErg (both) $1,900 Stations 1 and 5 - no choosing
Weight Sled (push/pull capable) $800-1,200 Stations 2 & 3 (Sled Push, Sled Pull)
Bumper Plates (140+ kg) $400-600 Load for sled, general strength
Rubber Flooring (300+ sq ft) $300-400 Protects floor, enables full movement
Optional: Timing Gate / Stopwatch System $200-300 Track splits, measure progress scientifically
Total Estimated Cost $4,700-5,200 All 8 stations + full sim

With Complete tier, you own everything. Run a full 10+ km race simulation at home. Train with a partner in Doubles format. Measure your splits and refine pacing. No gym required, no equipment limitations.

Popular Sled Options: Rogue Infinity Sled ($900-1,100), Rep Fitness Speed Sled ($700-800), or DIY sled builds from Pinterest ($300-500 in materials). Each works equally well for HYROX training.

Space Requirements: Aim for 40+ feet of push/pull distance and 20+ feet of clear space around the SkiErg. A two-car garage is enough. A basement is ideal. A single-car garage is tight but workable for sled and ski use sequentially (not simultaneously).

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, but not optimally. The sled push and pull are 20-25% of the race time. Plan to train at a gym with sled equipment during peak training blocks (8-12 weeks before race day).

Most athletes should choose the SkiErg because it is the exact station you will encounter on race day. For most HYROX athletes, SkiErg is the higher priority.

Minimum: 20x15 feet for Essential tier. For Complete tier: 40 feet of push/pull distance and 25 feet of width. A two-car garage is ideal. A single-car garage is tight but workable for sequential sled and ski use.

Concept2 machines hold 70-80% of their retail value. A Concept2 SkiErg bought new for $1,050 will resell for $700-800 easily. Start with Essential tier ($500 risk) and prove commitment over 8-12 weeks.

Quick Tier Comparison

Essential $500 3-4 of 8 First-timers, tight budget No sled, no SkiErg
Intermediate $1,500 6 of 8 Serious trainees, 2+ races Missing sled push/pull
Complete $5,000 All 8 Elite competitors, coaches, gyms Requires significant space and budget

What to Actually Bring on Race Day

All station equipment is provided at the venue. You only need to bring personal kit. The essentials: a cross-training or hybrid shoe with lateral stability (Nike Metcon, Reebok Nano, Nobull Trainer, or similar), running shorts or compression tights, a moisture-wicking top, and your timing chip and bib from check-in. Optional but recommended: thin workout gloves for the sled pull and farmers carry, a small fueling supply such as two energy gels for a 90-minute effort, and a personal water bottle for pre-race hydration.

Some athletes bring two pairs of shoes - running shoes for the run segments and cross-trainers for the stations - and change between them at transitions. This takes 30-60 seconds but can be worth it if you are optimising for time. For your first race, a single hybrid trainer is simpler and works well for both running and stations at recreational paces.

Avoid new gear on race day. Every item you bring should have been tested in training. New shoes cause blisters. New gloves affect your grip on the sled rope unexpectedly. New shorts may chafe on the sled movements. Your race kit should be your normal training kit.
