What is Age-Graded Score?

Scoring

A performance metric that adjusts your finish time against world-class benchmarks for your specific age group, enabling fair comparison across different ages. Scores range from 0-100, with 90+ being world-class.

Division

HYROX competitive categories for athletes aged 40+. Events use 5-year brackets (40-44, 45-49), while rankings aggregate into 10-year display brackets (40-49, 50-59, 60+).

What is AMRAP?

Format

As Many Reps As Possible. A training format commonly used in HYROX preparation where athletes complete maximum repetitions within a set time period.

What is Bib Number?

Format

The identification number worn by each HYROX participant during a race. Used for timing, identification, and result tracking.

What is Burpee Broad Jump?

Station

Station 4 of HYROX. Athletes perform burpee broad jumps over 80 meters. One of the highest-RPE stations, combining full-body strength with forward displacement.

What is Category?

Division

What is Chip Time?

Scoring

The official finish time measured from when an athlete crosses the start mat to when they cross the finish mat. More accurate than gun time for individual performance measurement.

What is Course Marshal?

Format

Officials positioned at stations and running sections who enforce proper form, count repetitions, and ensure athlete safety during HYROX events.

What is Division?

Division

The competitive category an athlete enters. HYROX offers Open (all levels), Pro (elite qualifying), Doubles (two-person teams), Relay (four-person teams), and Masters (40+/50+/60+ age groups).

What is DNF?

Scoring

Did Not Finish. Applied when an athlete starts a race but does not complete all stations and running segments within the time cap.

What is Doubles Division?

Division

A team format where two athletes complete the HYROX course together, splitting stations and running segments strategically. Available in Mixed, Men, and Women categories.

What is Elite Division?

What is Event Format?

HYROX consists of eight 1km running segments, each followed by one of eight functional workout stations, totaling approximately 8km of running plus 8 stations.

What is Farmers Carry?

Station

Station 6 of HYROX. Athletes carry two kettlebells for 200 meters. Weights vary by division and gender (16kg each for Open Women, 24kg each for Open Men).

What is Finish Time?

The total elapsed time from start to finish, including all running segments, station work, and transition zones. The primary performance metric in HYROX.

What is Global Ranking?

An athlete's position in the worldwide leaderboard for their division, calculated from official finish times across all tracked HYROX events.

What is Gun Time?

The time from when the wave starts to when an athlete finishes. Less precise than chip time for individual athletes due to wave start positioning.

What is HYROX?

Format

A global fitness race combining running and functional workout stations. Founded in Hamburg, Germany in 2017. The name combines "hybrid" and "oxygen" to reflect the sport's blend of endurance and functional fitness.

What is HYROX Season?

The annual competitive calendar. Seasons are numbered sequentially (Season 4, 5, 6, etc.) and run roughly from autumn to the following summer, culminating in the World Championship.

What is Half HYROX?

A shorter format with four running segments and four stations instead of eight. Designed as an entry-level event for beginners.

What is Individual Division?

Division

Any division where a single athlete completes the full course solo: Open, Pro, or Masters. As opposed to team formats (Doubles, Relay).

What is Masters Division?

Division

Age-group competitive categories for athletes aged 40 and over. Organized into brackets: 40-49 (Masters 40+), 50-59 (Masters 50+), and 60+ (Masters 60+), each with Men and Women categories.

What is Mixed Doubles?

Division

A Doubles division pairing one male and one female athlete. One of three Doubles categories alongside Men's Doubles and Women's Doubles.

What is Negative Split?

A pacing strategy where the second half of the race is completed faster than the first half. Often recommended for experienced HYROX athletes who can manage fatigue accumulation across stations.

O

What is Open Division?

Division

The standard HYROX competitive category open to all participants regardless of experience level. The most popular division with the widest range of finish times.

What is Overall Rank?

Scoring

An athlete's position among all finishers in their division at a specific event, or globally across all events.

P

What is Pace?

Scoring

The rate of movement, typically expressed as minutes per kilometer for running segments. Station pace refers to the time taken to complete each workout station.

What is Penalty?

Scoring

Time added to an athlete's result for rule infractions such as incomplete repetitions, improper form, or cutting the running course.

What is Percentile Rank?

Scoring

Where an athlete's time falls relative to all other finishers in the same division. 90th percentile means faster than 90% of participants.

What is Pro Division?

Division

The elite competitive tier in HYROX. Requires meeting qualification standards. Athletes compete for World Championship qualification points, ranking positions, and prize money.

Q

What is Qualification Standard?

The finish time threshold required to enter the Pro division or to qualify for the HYROX World Championship. Standards vary by division and gender.

What is Relay Division?

Division

A team format where four athletes split the course, each completing two running segments and two stations. Available at select HYROX events.

What is Roxzone?

Format

The designated transition area between running segments and workout stations. Athletes pass through the Roxzone before and after each station. Transition time is included in total finish time.

What is Rowing?

Station

Station 5 of HYROX. Athletes complete 1,000 meters on a Concept2 rowing ergometer. A technique-dependent station where efficient stroke rate management significantly affects time.

What is Run Split?

The time taken to complete one of the eight 1km running segments between stations. Monitoring run split consistency is key to effective pacing strategy.

What is Sandbag Lunges?

Station 7 of HYROX. Athletes carry a sandbag while performing walking lunges over 100 meters. Weights: 10kg (Open Women), 20kg (Open Men). Often the most grueling station.

What is SkiErg?

Station

Station 1 of HYROX. Athletes complete 1,000 meters on a Concept2 SkiErg. The first station after the opening run, requiring upper body endurance and pacing discipline.

What is Sled Pull?

Station

Station 3 of HYROX. Athletes pull a weighted sled 50 meters using a rope. Weights: 78kg (Open Women), 103kg (Open Men).

What is Sled Push?

Station

Station 2 of HYROX. Athletes push a weighted sled 50 meters. Weights: 102kg (Open Women), 152kg (Open Men). Often the most time-variable station.

What is Split Time?

The time recorded for an individual station or running segment. Used to analyze performance across different sections of the race.

What is Station Time?

Scoring

The time spent completing a workout station, measured from entering to exiting the station area. Does not include Roxzone transition time.

What is Time Cap?

Format

The maximum allowed time to complete a HYROX event. Athletes who exceed the time cap receive a DNF. Typically set at 4 hours for standard events.

What is Transition Zone?

Format

U

What is Ultra HYROX?

Format

A format where athletes complete two full HYROX courses back-to-back (16 running segments, 16 stations). An extreme endurance challenge offered at select events.

W

What is Wall Balls?

Station

Station 8 of HYROX (the final station). Athletes perform wall ball shots: 75 reps for women (4kg), 100 reps for men (6kg). Target height: 9ft (women), 10ft (men).

What is Wave Start?

Format

HYROX events use a wave start system where groups of athletes begin at timed intervals. Reduces congestion on the course and at stations.

What is World Championship?

Format

The annual culmination of each HYROX season where the top-qualifying athletes from each division compete for the world title. Held at a single venue.
