Bodybuilding great Arnold Schwarzenegger continues to offer fitness tips after leaving behind one of the most decorated bodybuilding careers of all time. In his Daily Pump Newsletter, Schwarzenegger detailed a nine-minute ab workout and spoke on the value of bodyweight exercises.
After navigating a wildly successful Men’s Open tenure, Schwarzenegger vowed to change the reputation of the sport. He appeared in the hit docudrama Pumping Iron in 1977 and helped push bodybuilding to the next level. While competing actively, Schwarzenegger shared the stage with several icons, like Franco Columbo, Lou Ferrigno, and the late former three-time Mr. Olympia winner Sergio Oliva.
Schwarzenegger may have stopped competing, but his passion for bodybuilding lives on at the annual Arnold Sports Festival, which began in 1989. Earlier this month, Men’s Open standout Samson Dauda was awarded the title.
Having labored through countless hours of work at the gym, Schwarzenegger offers fitness advice to fans in his later years. He recently talked about the importance of developing a steady workout routine. Additionally, he explained some of the benefits to using caffeine as a pre-workout tool. In his latest newsletter, the bodybuilding legend broke down a useful nine-minute abs routine.

The 9-Minute Abs Workout
“It’s not exactly what they predicted in There’s Something About Mary, but shorter workouts are having a moment.
Research suggests 9 minutes of intense bodyweight training could improve heart health and leg strength.
The study examined a workout consisting of just 5 exercises. The participants alternated between 1 minute of high-intensity bodyweight movements and 1 minute of walking in place.
After six weeks (3 workouts per week), the volunteers improved their endurance, lower body power, and markers associated with cardiovascular health. Even more impressive? Compliance was 100 percent, meaning everyone was able to complete all the workouts. This is extremely rare in fitness studies, but a good sign that anyone can find time for a super short workout,” shared Schwarzenegger.
If you want to try the exact program, technically, you need 11 minutes (the plan included a 1-minute warmup and cool down). Here’s what it looks like:
- Warmup: 1-minute of walking
- Exercise 1: burpees (60 seconds)
- Walk in place for 1 minute
- Exercise 2: high knees (60 seconds)
- Walk in place for 1 minute
- Exercise 3: split squat jumps (60 seconds)
- Walk in place for 1 minute
- Exercise 4: high knees (60 seconds)
- Walk in place for 1 minute
- Exercise 5: squat jumps (60 seconds)
- Cool down: 1-minute of walking
Some of Arnold’s other fitness tips included a one-step weight loss plan. He recommends weight replacement drinks as an ideal solution for losing weight. Schwarzenegger also offered some unique pointers for full-body stretches and building longevity-inspired workout plans.
