Symmetry, conditioning, and proportions defined Frank Zane’s bodybuilding career. Taking to Instagram on April 21, 2026, “The Chemist” outlined how to build muscle, strength, and definition with his signature one-arm dumbbell triceps extension.
Frank Zane‘s bodybuilding approach was calculated down to the rep. He presented one of the most complete and toned physiques to ever hit the stage. He also remains one of the few athletes to beat Arnold Schwarzenegger, a feat he accomplished at the 1968 Mr. Universe.
In retirement, he’s been open about the tactics that helped him secure three Mr. Olympia titles (1977-1979). From sunbathing as a natural diuretic to visualization strategies, he mastered the intangibles to become an all-time great. At 83, training might not look like it once did, but Zane still has all of the tips and tricks that turned him into a legend.
Frank Zane Shares How to Build Muscle, Strength, and Definition With One-Arm Dumbbell Triceps Extensions
In the Instagram reel, Zane called the one-arm dumbbell triceps extension a favorite. His setup instructions were simple: start sitting or standing with a dumbbell in one hand, with the palm facing in. Raise the dumbbell overhead and keep the upper arm close to your ear.
“Try my favorite, the one arm dumbbell triceps extension! Start by sitting or standing with a dumbbell in one hand, palm facing in. Raise the dumbbell overhead, keeping your upper arm close to your ear.”
To finish the repetition, lower the weight slowly behind your head, bend the elbow, and extend the arm upward. He said to keep your core engaged and avoid arching your back for perfect form.
“Slowly lower the weight behind your head by bending your elbow, then extend your arm back up, squeezing your triceps at the top. Keep your core engaged and avoid arching your back for perfect form!”
He added that this exercise isolates the triceps, which can build muscle, strength, and definition over time.
“This exercise isolates your triceps, helping build muscle and strength while improving muscle definition. It also promotes better muscle balance and stability, making your workouts more effective. Add it to your routine for strong, sculpted arms!” Frank Zane shared.
While Schwarzenegger utilized cheat reps, Zane doesn’t believe they have a place in proper training routines. He argued that they lead to poor muscle shape because other muscles receive unintended work. Zane also advocated against bulking and called it a shortcut, stressing that true muscle takes time to develop.
The IFBB Hall of Fame inductee still sports impressive arms in retirement. He credited the one-arm dumbbell triceps extension as a long-time staple in his routine.
