The amateur run that made his name. He won Mr Britain in 1981 and again in 1983, the European Championships in 1982, and the Mr. Universe in 1984, the same year he was runner-up at the World Championships. He took the Universe professional title in 1995.
Early career
He started in the junior class in 1979 and was competing there until 1981. From 1982 he was in the open class, with a spell in the tall division in the mid 1980s. His two Olympia appearances came at the end of that decade: seventh in 1988 and eighth in 1989. Twelve of his recorded contests are amateur and fourteen professional.
