Pete Grymkowski won the Mr America and Mr World heavyweight titles in 1977, and a few years later bought Gold's Gym. The second thing shaped the sport considerably more than the first.

Win rate here is first-place finishes as a share of all 19 recorded contest results. It is published only where a career holds at least five, because below that a single placing moves the figure by twenty points or more.

Known for

1977 is the competitive peak: the heavyweight class at both the Mr America and the Mr World. Before that he had won Mr Eastern America in 1970, the Junior Mr USA in 1971 and the Junior Mr America in 1972, and he was Mr America runner-up three years running from 1971 to 1973.

He was also a repeat Most Muscular winner, taking that award at the Junior Mr USA, the Junior Mr America and the Mr America. In an era judged on symmetry as much as size, that title said something specific about how he looked.

Early career

His recorded career runs from 1970 to 1979 and ends with third at the Pittsburgh Pro Invitational. Ten years, nineteen contests, eight wins.

What followed is why the name survives. Grymkowski became one of the owners of Gold's Gym at the end of the 1970s and spent decades building it from a single Venice gym into an international chain.

Where these results come from. Each contest in the table was recorded from a named source, and for Pete Grymkowski that source is MuscleMemory. Open any contest above and that page names its own source and links to it where the source is still reachable. That archive no longer answers at the addresses we hold, so it is credited by name here and not offered as a link.

Legacy

Most competitors of his era are remembered, if at all, for a placing. Grymkowski is remembered by anyone who has trained in a Gold's Gym anywhere in the world, which is a different and much larger kind of footprint.

Sources

Competition placings on this page come from our own contest database and cover his record from 1970 to 1979.

His involvement in Gold's Gym is not held in our database and is stated from public record. We have not traced it to a primary source.

In 3 meetings, Robby Robinson finished ahead of Pete Grymkowski 3 times to 0.

Opponents are ranked by how often they shared a stage and how big the stage was, not by reputation. A meeting is one contest where both competed in the same division and both were placed.
