Ask Question?

Arm Wrestling has been around for a very long time, and people have used it throughout history to determine who is the most powerful. However, in modern history, it has developed into a mainstream sport, and many believe that Devon Larratt is the greatest athlete in its history. The Canadian has won numerous Arm Wrestling World Champion titles and has raised the sport to a new level of popularity. So, in this article, we gathered information about Larratt’s early life, training, diet, and career.

Full Name: Devon Larratt
Weight Height Age
264.5 lbs (120 kg) 6’5” (196 cm) 50 years
Date of Birth Era Nationality
April 24, 1975 2000s / 2010s/ 2020s Canadian

Early Life

Devon Larratt was born in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, where he spent his formative years. Interestingly, Devon developed his passion at a very young age, specifically in his younger teenage years. However, it all originated from his first arm wrestling match against his own grandmother.

As the years passed, Devon Larratt retained his passion for arm wrestling, but developed some more interests. Most notably, he chose to join the military at the age of 21 and became a member of the Canadian Special Operations Forces. That marked a huge portion of his life, as he served with the Joint Task Force 2 for 16 years. During that time, Devon was deployed seven times to Afghanistan, where he was also wounded.

Devon Larratt loved being in the military, despite the fact that his life was in danger on multiple occasions. In fact, he never had the desire to leave the military and believed that he would spend his entire life serving. Moreover, he managed to coordinate his commitment to the military and his obligations as a professional arm wrestler quite successfully.

Devon Larratt also did Judo at a very young age, as his mother recognized his passion for fighting. He trained in the sport since he was in grade two (7-8 years old) all the way until he joined the military.

Arm Wrestling Career

The Beginnings

During the time that Devon Larratt started doing arm wrestling, the sport was far from being mainstream. So, he competed in “underground” matches for some time. However, he made his first International appearance in 1999 at the WAF Worlds. Interestingly, Devon immediately faced John Brzenk, the father of modern day arm wrestling, and lost.

Then, Devon Larratt spent the next two years improving and winning regional and national competitions, before making his second international performance at the 2002 Niagara Championships, which he managed to win, and started getting more recognized in the community.

Following this, Devon Larratt was more frequently seen on the biggest arm wrestling stages and continued to build a respectable reputation for himself. He beat a number of athletes with both his right and left arms, including a shocking win against John Brzenk in 2008. In fact, he was the first man to beat Brzenk in a supermatch in over two decades. Not only that, but Devon managed to make it look like easy work, not allowing Brzenk to win even one round of the match.

Taking The Throne

After beating John Brzenk, Devon Larrat developed the status of being the greatest right-handed arm wrestler in the world at that moment. He proved that by also beating the likes of Michael Todd, which would later turn into one of the biggest rivalries that the sport has ever seen.

Devon Larratt’s impressive streak continued in following years, and he looked unbeatable. Consequently, in 2010, Devon beat a number of athletes to become the number one ranked arm wrestler in both the right-handed and left-handed divisions. This was quite a unique achievement, as it proved his dominance regardless of the task at hand.

Being the man to beat, Devon Larratt had to defend his titles on multiple occasions. Unfortunately, in 2011, Devon lost his left-handed World title to Travis Bagent. However, just a year later, he got the opportunity to reclaim it in a duel against Andrey Pushkar. That was not a big problem for Devon, as he won the match with a 5-1 result.

2013 was challenging for Devon Larratt as well, as Oleg Zhokh, Wilton Brock, and Eric Woelfel all tried to take his left-hand title. However, he managed to fend off all threats and remain in possession. That is, until he was forced to have surgeries done on both of his elbows later that year, thus losing both the right-handed and left-handed titles.

Coming Back From Injuries

After recovering from his elbow injuries, Devon Larrat needed some time to get back to his best. So, from 2013 until 2016, Devon took part in multiple matches, where he did rack up some victories. However, he also lost matches against the likes of John Brzenk and Marcio Barboza, which showed that he still needed more time to reach the top.

However, in 2016, Devon Larratt started picking up momentum and once again started crushing nearly everyone who stood on his path. So, he regained the titles for both arms in the WAL federation and was in possession of the ‘Legacy Hammer” for both arms.

Note: The Legacy Hammer represents the greatest arm wrestler in the world. When a reigning champion is defeated, the Legacy Hammer is passed to the victorious opponent. So, it serves as a way to give recognition and respect to the best arm wrestler in the world at that moment.

Unfortunately, despite being on a winning streak, Devon Larratt lost two arm wrestling matches in 2018, and they both cost him the Legacy Hammer. Firstly, he lost against Michael Todd in a right-handed match, and then he lost to Denis Cyplenkov in a left-handed match.

Three years would pass until Devon Larratt got the opportunity to regain his right-handed title in an epic rematch against Michael Todd. So, despite dealing with some illness and recovering in the lead up to the match, Devon still managed to beat Todd.

2021 proved to be the year of Devon Larratt, as the majority of athletes who faced him at the time, including Michael Todd, claimed that they had never seen anything like it. Moreover, Devon weighed in at 293 pounds (133 kilograms) that year, which made him look like a true giant.

Larratt vs Saginashvili

After beating Todd, Devon Larratt sparked another fierce rivalry with the Georgian Hulk, Levan Saginashvili. The two men first went head-to-head at the 2022 King of The Table 4 event, which was one of the most hyped-up matches in history. However, the sheer size and power of Saginashvili were enough to conquer Devon, who lost all six rounds.

That did not crush Devon Larratt’s spirit, as he continued competing against other elite arm wrestlers, beating the likes of Denis Cyplenkov and Ermes Gasparini. Moreover, despite primarily focusing on right-hand training, Devon took part in seven left-handed matches in 2023. Not only that, but he also managed to win all seven of them.

So ever since his initial encounter against Levan, Devon Larratt made tremendous improvements and has been on a streak of great results. So, Devon and Levan decided to put up a rematch at the 2024 East vs West 12 event.

Devon Larratt came into the rematch more prepared than ever. But, unfortunately, the 60-kilogram (132-pound) bodyweight difference, as well as the unbelievable power of Levan once again proved to be unconquerable. After the match, Devon praised Levan and revealed that he was exploring options of competing in the lighter weight classes instead of the Super Heavyweight.

In the end, Levan Saginashvili proved to be the only man who competed against Devon Larratt multiple times and remained unbeaten. On the other hand, dozens of other athletes who faced Devon fell victim to his incredible arm wrestling technique and strength.

Devon Larratt’s Training & Diet

Training

Devon Larratt has experimented with various training styles over the course of his career. Having done Judo and spent over 15 years in the military, Devon trained his body to be capable of all sorts of movements. However, he now refers to himself exclusively as an arm wrestler. So, his only focus in training is to improve his arm wrestling abilities.

Specifically, as Devon Larratt revealed in an interview, he trains 3-4 times a day, and all of those sessions are only focused on arm wrestling movements of his right arm. He also separates his training into three parts, the first of which is low intensity arm wrestling.

Another one is conditioning and rehab, which Devon Larratt finds extremely important, considering that ligaments and tendons suffer a lot in arm wrestling. The third portion of his training is strength and specific movements, which consist of a few special exercises.

Diet

Similar to training, Devon Larratt has tried out numerous types of diets, including vegan, carnivore, balanced, bodybuilding, and plenty of others. However, dieting never presented itself as an important factor for Devon, since he doesn’t believe that it is so important regarding arm wrestling.

Instead, Devon Larratt stated that the main goal for arm wrestlers is to eat enough food. So, Devon loves to experiment with food, as seen in his YouTube video where he made eggs with doritos.

Interestingly, Devon Larratt has a somewhat iconic connection with one meal especially – the pancakes. At one point in his career, Devon came to the conclusion that he needed to gain size and strength, and he figured out that pancakes were the perfect tool for that. So, his love for pancakes covered in maple syrup has been noticed by many and turned into a playful meme.

Apart from arm wrestling, Devon Larratt also experimented with boxing, having taken on the 2018 World’s Strongest Man, Hafthor Bjornsson. However, that did not go well for him, as the bout ended in a technical knockout at the end of round one.

Devon Larratt has already been through quite a lot in the sport of arm wrestling. Luckily, he has stated on multiple occasions that it is his biggest passion and that he intends to stay involved in the sport his entire life. Devon is certainly an important figure in the community, having played a big role in getting the sport to this point, and hopefully pushing it even further in the future.
