Jay Cutler credits the movie industry for helping kickstart his bodybuilding career. On March 29, 2025, he discussed the greatest physiques in Hollywood and touched on how Arnold Schwarzenegger inspired him to compete in the sport.

Four-time Mr. Olympia Jay Cutler dominated the Men’s Open landscape (2006-07, 2009-2010) and elevated bodybuilding to new heights. He was responsible for dethroning Ronnie Coleman during the peak years of his career.

Cutler admits the physiques in Hollywood inspired countless individuals, including himself. From Sylvester Stallone’s Rocky franchise to Jean-Claude Van Damme’s film contributions, the four-time Mr. Olympia believes there’s been a shift in the movie industry, with less inspirational characters on display to help shape the future of the sport.

Jay Cutler Speaks on Hollywood Physiques and Arnold Schwarzenegger Inspiring His Bodybuilding Career

In a recent YouTube video, Cutler stressed that Hollywood has fewer enviable physiques than it once had.

“What I wonder is this – this might be some of our parents at home that have children that are teenagers – are there any film actors now besides Dwayne Johnson that people look at that and say I want to have the physiques? Who else has great physiques in Hollywood?”

While names like Jason Statham and Chris Hemsworth have impressive looks, Cutler maintains that growing up, there were more inspirational figures.

“Jason Statham,” he shared. “Chris Hemsworth, but don’t you think we had a lot more inspirational characters growing up? Because you had Stallone, Van Damme, Arnold, I mean, Bruce Willis was an action star, but he didn’t have a body.”

He shared that Arnold Schwarzenegger was a key inspiration that nudged him to try out bodybuilding.

“I can say that if anyone asked me why I got into bodybuilding, I think Arnold, yeah. I don’t give enough credit to Arnold because yes, he did Commando, all those films, but I think it was more the Stallone, The Rocky series and First Blood [Rambo].”

Cutler adds that the entire movie experience has changed. Instead of seeking out movie theaters, fans are all about instant gratification now and watch streams on their phones, tablets, and TVs.

“When we grew up, it was like a huge ordeal to go to the movies. You probably had to go a distance, now it’s like it’s right here at any time. You can go to any casino, really, but I feel like the industry is kind of past us now. Yeah, everything is streaming. It’s all different now,” he shared

Cutler isn’t the first personality in fitness to discuss how physiques have changed in Hollywood. IFBB Pro Greg Doucette also tackled the topic recently. He believes Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson is using performance-enhancers to attain his look.

Celebrity physiques have changed for the most part, but Cutler hasn’t forgotten how Schwarzenegger influenced his direction in the sport. He believes enviable action physiques are less common, but adds that Dwayne Johnson is still carrying the torch.
