The sport of Strongman appeals to many because of its innovative approach to some base exercises, resulting in multiple variations and standards. One of those is the 18-inch Deadlift, which became one of the staple events in the Strongman community. Well, Oleksii Novikov recently set a new World Record, locking out 550 kilograms (1,212.5 pounds) at the 2025 Ultimate Strongman Barcelona Strongman Grand Prix on March 15th.

As the name suggests, this variation of the deadlift is elevated to a height of 18 inches, completely altering the way in which it is performed. This suits Oleksii Novikov well, as he set a record in this event back at the 2020 WSM, which ultimately led him to the overall title. Oleksii Novikov’s record has been taken since, but the Ukrainian just waited for the right moment to take it back.

Oleksii Novikov had a clear goal at the competition, loading 550 kilograms (1,212.5 pounds) to take the record. Moreover, Oleksii did not wear a deadlift suit, although many athletes chose the opposite. Instead, he only put on a lifting belt and figure eight lifting straps. Oleksii took a few deep breaths and then explosively pulled the bar. It resulted in a very smooth lift and a new 18-inch Deadlift World Record.

*Rauno Heinla held the previous 18-inch Deadlift World Record of 540-kg (1,190.5-lb). He set the record at the 2023 Tartu Rammumees ja Rammunaine.

Oleksii Novikov is seemingly getting back to his best since he has had some health troubles in the past period. He struggled with certain injuries, including an elbow condition that significantly impacted his performance at the 2023 World’s Strongest Man. However, Oleksii has also had trouble with low hemoglobin, which forced him to withdraw from the 2025 Europe’s Strongest Man. Oleksii made a statement at the time, revealing what his plans are.

“Also please understand that I do not want to show how my body does not cope with the pace of competition and I am just suffocating, so I will prepare well and give a good performance, soon, very soon.” — translation of Oleksii Novikov’s Instagram post caption.

Hope emerged once Oleksii Novikov was confirmed to compete at the 2025 World’s Strongest Man on May 15-18. However, his name was absent from the official lineup, indicating that he withdrew from the competition. This is very unfortunate considering that one of the events at the upcoming WSM is set to be an 18-inch Deadlift for Max Weight. So, being the new World Record holder, Oleksii would have definitely been the star of the event.

Oleksii Novikov has taken part in 54 international and national Strongman competitions throughout the years. He managed to take home 16 victories, including the 2020 WSM, 2022 Rogue Invitational, and 2022 Europe’s Strongest Man. He also set multiple records in events that are focused on both lower and upper body strength, showing just how diverse his set of skills is.

Oleksii Novikov’s 550-kilogram (1,212.5-pound) 18-inch Deadlift World Record is definitely a great sign since it shows that he could soon get back in contention for some of the world’s greatest titles. He has proven his greatness in the past, which is why many fans are hopeful of seeing him at the top once again.
