It is safe to say that CrossFit fans had a lot to see at the 2021 Dubai CrossFit Championship, held in the United Arab Emirates, December 16-18, 2021. The competition gathered 40 of elite CrossFit athletes, who gave it their all and put up some monumental performances. The venue for the competition was the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Stadium and Ski Dubai Mall of the Emirates.
Roman Khrennikov managed to put in a great performance in the men’s category, as he came almost a 100 points ahead of the second place finisher. Laura Horvath did not dominate as much in the women’s division but still finished a comfortable 33 points ahead of her closest competitor. As the winners of the competition, Roman Khrennikov and Laura Horvath will each take $50,000 back home.

Stay Frosty
The first workout of the competition involved snow, it was held in an indoor ski resort in Ski Dubai. Workout time caps were 16 minutes for men, and 17 minutes for women. Athletes had to do 500 meters on the ski erg, followed by 400 meters run up and down the ski slope. Athletes were required to do 5 rounds of this.

Event 1B
The second workout was also held in the ski resort, but it was much simpler than the first one. Athletes had to run up a 700-meter slope, wearing a weighted vest. Men’s vest was 20 lbs (9.1 kg), and the women’s was 14 lbs (6.4 kg). The time cap was 7 minutes.

Lift-Off
The third workout was held in the Dubai Tennis Center, where athletes had to max out on the Clean and Jerk. Multiple times it came to a tiebreaker, and athletes were ranked based on their second attempt. In the men’s division 2 athletes shared the first spot.

Event 3
The fourth workout was one of the most complicated and demanding workouts, it was a real endurance test. The time cap was 25 minutes.

- 40 A-jumps with weight vest (20 pounds/14 pounds)
- 30 sandbag cleans (150 pounds/100 pounds)
- 20 bar muscle-ups
- 10 paralette handstand push-ups

Event 4
The fifth workout was elimination based. Athletes had to do four rounds of: 20 calorie bike erg, followed by a 15-meter unbroken handstand walk and followed by 10 overhead squats (85 kg / 60 kg). The time cap was 3 minutes.
Four rounds in repeat cutting the field down (10, 10 – 8,8 – 6,6 – 8,4)

Event 5
In the sixth workout, athletes had to do muscle-ups combined with thrusters. The rep range was 2-4-6-8-10. Men’s thrusters were done with 60 kg, and women’s with 40 kg. The time cap was 10 minutes. In the men’s division, we had the opportunity to see a great race, with the difference between first and second place being only two-tenths of a second.

The final event of the competition was held in the Dubai Tennis Center, and the workout consisted of several exercises. Athletes had to do 9 rope climbs, followed by 15 jerks (100 kg / 70 kg), then do 21 dumbbell deadlifts (90 lbs / 60 lbs) and do lunges to the end. The time limit was 8 minutes.

The 2021 Dubai CrossFit Championship was a great success, introducing workouts in the snow for the first time, having some great races, and it was all streamed on YouTube so every CrossFit fan can enjoy. The competition is gaining some momentum and there is a lot to expect from the next edition.
