The first day of the 2026 CrossFit Games for the individual division took place on July 22nd in San Jose, California. It saw 30 men and 30 women who managed to qualify for the biggest competition of the year take on a total of seven events in what was one of the most intense days of competition in recent years.
The first out of four days of competition for the individuals at the 2026 CrossFit Games featured a perfect mix of events, testing their endurance, peak strength, and technical ability. As such, it served as a great way to indicate who the favorites are when it comes to winning the entire competition and claiming the title of Fittest on Earth.
Jay Crouch spent the majority of day one leading the men’s division. However, he ended up dropping a couple of spaces during the seventh event. James Sprague capitalized on it, managing to take over the top spot going into the second day of the competition.
Aimee Cringle took the lead in the women’s division, having managed to win three out of seven events. However, Lucy Campbell and Madeline Sturt also put up very consistent performances, which proved that they are in contention for the title.

Madeline Sturt walked away victorious from the first event of the 2026 CrossFit Games, as she put in a truly spectacular performance from start to finish. She paced herself well on the 1,000-meter row and started ramping up the speed in the second part of the workout. Where she really stood out was on the pull-ups, as she managed to chain up repetitions when others started losing strength and energy.
Lucy Campbell finished second at the 2025 CrossFit Games and came into this year’s competition as one of the biggest favorites to take home the title. Her performance in the opening event validated that, as she was the second quickest woman to reach the finish line, only behind Madeline Sturt. Men’s Results
When it comes to any kind of running event, all eyes turn to Ricky Garard. The Australian athlete possesses an incredible skill to maintain a very quick pace for seemingly unlimited amounts of time. He made sure to get an early lead, despite the efforts from other men to keep up with him on the first hill. From there on, Ricky continued increasing the distance between him and the rest of the pack, which ultimately earned him the win with a time of 39 minutes and 33 seconds.
The 2024 Fittest Man on Earth, James Sprague, finished ten seconds after Garard and claimed 96 points for second place. Jay Cruch followed up on his win from event one and placed third on the 7,200-meter run. He was the only man, apart from Garard and Sprague, that managed to finish the event in under 40 minutes.

Aimee Cringle spent a large part of the race behind Haley Adams. At one point, it seemed that she had lost the duel, as Adams managed to get far ahead of her. However, she had enough energy remaining to speed up on the final lap and ended up overtaking her rival to take the win. Her final time came out to eight minutes and three seconds.
Although she dropped her lead to Cringle in the final moments of the race, Haley Adams still secured a very impressive second-place finish in the ranch run. She ended up being 33 seconds slower than Sturt but beat the third-place finisher, Ella Wilkinson, by over a minute.
- Aimee Cringle — 40:42

Individual Event 3 / 4 / 5 — The CrossFit Total

- 1-rep-max back squat (Event 3)
- 1-rep-max shoulder press (Event 4)
- 1-rep-max deadlift (Event 5)
Men’s Results (Back Squat / Event 3)
The Back Squat witnessed an epic battle between two men — Colten Mertens and Guilherme Malheiros. The two kept pushing each other throughout the entire session. In the end, it came down to a difference of just 5 pounds. In the end, Colten had the winning edge, lifting 555 pounds, as opposed to Malheiros’ 550 pounds.
Austin Hatfield was in a similar situation, as he ended up lifting 525 pounds, managing to beat Bayley Martin and Nick Mathew by 5 pounds as well. Consequently, Austin ranked third on the squat leaderboard.
- Colten Mertens — 555-lb
- Guilherme Malheiros — 550-lb
- Austin Hatfield — 525-lb
- Bayley Martin — 520-lb
- Nick Mathew — 520-lb
Men’s Results (Shoulder Press / Event 4)
The men then proceeded to the second stage — the Shoulder Press. Interestingly, Colten Mertens ranked first once again, showing just how incredible he is with all events that include a barbell and heavy weights. The heaviest of his three attempts came out to 260 pounds, which is certainly a mind-blowing lift.
Ricky Garard secured another incredible finish in the Shoulder Press, showing that he is really focused on taking home the title, with his heaviest press coming out to 250 pounds. Dylan Hamming and Roman Khrennikov had to share the third place, with both men managing to lift 245 pounds.

- Dylan Hamming — 245-lb

Men’s Results (Deadlift / Event 5)
Patrick Vellner is one of the most experienced athletes on the professional CrossFit scene and is a true beast when it comes to certain events. The deadlift is certainly one of the exercises that he enjoys, as seen by his performance at the 2026 CrossFit Games. He was the only man to achieve and exceed the 600-pound milestone, showing just how much pulling power he possesses.
James Sprague is mostly known for his speed and agility, but that clearly carries over well to the deadlift. Namely, James locked out 590 pounds, which ranked him above everyone except for Patrick Vellner. Nick Mathew lifted just 5 pounds less than Sprague, which put him in front of James Sprague.
- Patrick Vellner — 605-lb
- James Sprague — 590-lb
- Nick Mathew — 585-lb
- Tudor Magda — 580-lb
- Dallin Pepper — 575-lb
Women’s Results (Back Squat / Event 3)
The Back Squat was the first challenge of the sequence, but the athletes were far from fresh considering that they came off a 7,200-meter run. However, it was not a problem for Kyra Milligan, who managed to put up a 370-pound squat. That was more than enough to take the win, as she lifted 20 pounds more than the next best woman.
Mirjam Von Rohr’s heaviest squat after her three attempts came out to 350 pounds. With this lift, she was left in a clear position, finding herself behind Kyra and far ahead of Anikha Greer who finished in third place.
- Kyra Milligan — 370-lb
- Mirjam Von Rohr — 350-lb
- Anikha Greer — 335-lb
- Madeline Sturt — 330-lb
- Hannah Black — 330-lb
Women’s Results (Shoulder Press / Event 4)
As soon as the squat finished, the women moved on to the Shoulder Press. There we witnessed one of the greatest feats of strength ever seen in the women’s division. It belonged to Alex Gazan, who managed to strict press 170 pounds. It is safe to say that it was enough to take the event win.
The battle for second place was much more intense, as four women found themselves within 5 pounds of each other. Ultimately, Paige Rodgers separated herself with a 155-pound lift. On the other hand, Ellie Turner, Anikha Greer, and Aimee Cringle tied for third place, as all of them ended up with a score of 150 pounds.
- Alex Gazan 170-lb
- Paige Rodgers — 155-lb
- Ellie Turner — 150-lb

Individual Event 6 — Grass Oval Bicycle Race
For time:
- 20 laps on the track
Men’s Results
Contrary to the women’s division, none of the men decided to go for an early separation from the group. Instead, they all decided to stick together, with their rankings changing a number of times throughout the race. As the men entered the final lap, they all started speeding up. The final straight was a true sprint race, with multiple men crossing the finish line at practically the same time. Once the scores were reviewed, it was revealed that Moritz Fiebig was the event winner with a time of 18:15.77.
Dallin Pepper was 0.14 seconds slower than Fiebig, while Jay Crouch finished an additional 0.25 seconds after. As a result, they made up the top three in the bike race, while five other men finished the event within just two seconds of them.

- Luis Cuellar — 18:28.14
Women’s Results
Although it might seem like a fairly simple task on paper, the Bycicle Race was actually a grueling test of fitness. Seeing that the athletes had already performed a very demanding run, heavy squats, and had a stint on the rower, riding a bike with fatigued legs was definitely a challenge for everyone. Aimee Cringle, however, enjoyed the task, utilizing the energy she had left to separate herself from the pack and betting on her ability to defend the position. In the end, her time of 19:10 was enough for yet another event win.
In an event that lasts nearly 20 minutes, it would be easy to expect larger margins between the athletes. However, that was not the case in the women’s division, as Emma Lawson, Lucy Campbell, and Aline Wirz all finished within less than half a minute. Lawson earned the second-place finish after beating Lucy by just 0.01 seconds.
- Aimee Cringle — 19:10.78
- Emma Lawson — 19:17.29
- Lucy Campbell — 19:17.30
- Aline Wirz — 19:17.58
- Haley Adams — 19:34.80
- Madeline Sturt — 19:51.28
- Ellie Turner — 20:11.34

Men’s Results

Ty Jenkins maintained the best pace overall, completing the swimming portions with ease and using the remainder of his energy to complete burpees. His time came out to 11 minutes and nine seconds.
Justin Medeiros put in an incredible performance. He is known for being one of the most well-rounded CrossFitters in the world, but his efficiency was still insanely impressive. He ended up being just 14 seconds slower than Jenkins. Dalling Pepper placed third by being the only other man that finished in under 12 minutes.
- Ty Jenkins — 11:09
