The 2026 CrossFit Games came to a close on Sunday, July 26, at the SAP Center in San Jose, California, with James Sprague ascending to the top of the podium to claim his second career title as Fittest Man on Earth. Reclaiming the crown after his breakthrough victory in 2024, Sprague put together a relentlessly consistent performance, taking control early and refusing to let the title slip away.
Entering the week, the men’s field faced immense expectations for a tight, high-stakes battle for the top spot. Sprague, however, dictated the pace of the entire weekend from the opening events onward. Building an early lead on day one, he systematically extended his advantage over the rest of the field across every test of aerobic engine, high-skill gymnastics, and raw strength, ensuring the leader’s jersey stayed firmly in his possession through the final event on Sunday.

Interestingly, James Sprague is the only athlete in the history of the men’s division at the CrossFit Games that has managed to reclaim his title after losing it once. Every other athlete who won multiple titles did so in succession. Once their winning streak stopped, they never got back to the top of the podium. Well, Sprague has now broken that curse, having won titles in 2024 and 2026.
James Sprague took the overall lead on day one of the 2026 CrossFit Games and finished every day since in the top spot. However, it was not all smooth sailing, since James faced tremendous pressure from Dallin Pepper and Jay Crouch. Nevertheless, he displayed a true champion mentality and bounced back every time.
The defining moment for the men’s division at the 2026 CrossFit Games came at the end of day three. While James’ lead was slowly shrinking, he placed second and first in the final two events of the day. Not only did this increase the buffer zone between him and other athletes, but it also provided huge momentum going into the final day of the competition.
As expected, Sprague delivered on Sunday as well, closing out his competition with three solid performances and not allowing Pepper to get any closer to him.

James Sprague now joins Justin Medeiros with two CrossFit Games titles. However, it seems that Sprague is just now entering his prime, which means that he might add some more trophies to his cabinet in the years to come. Now he has some time to enjoy being the Fittest Man on Earth before setting his sights on the next challenge.
