Pierre Vandensteen won the short class at the Mr Universe in 1961, 1963 and 1974, and at Mr World, Mr Europe and Mr International as well. He was Belgian and competed internationally for twenty-one years.

Win rate here is first-place finishes as a share of all 23 recorded contest results. It is published only where a career holds at least five, because below that a single placing moves the figure by twenty points or more.

Known for

Three Mr Universe class titles spread across thirteen years is the headline, and the rest of the record matches it: Mr Europe in 1969 and 1974, Mr World in 1969, Mr International in 1973 and the European Championships in 1978.

He was also runner-up at the Mr Universe in 1960 and 1965 and third in 1959 and 1970, so for more than a decade he was almost always in the top three of the biggest amateur contest in the world.

Early career

His record opens in 1957 and the first win is the short class at the Belgium Mr Apollo in 1959. He won the Europe Mr Apollo in 1965 and the Mr Belgium professional title in 1967.

The last recorded win, the 1978 European Championships, comes nineteen years after the first.

Every contest result on record for Pierre Vandensteen, 23 in all. The table opens on the first 15 and expands in place from there. Nothing sits on a separate page. Won by names the winner of the division Pierre Vandensteen competed in, and shows a dash where that winner cannot be pinned to one person in the database.

Where these results come from. Each contest in the table was recorded from a named source, and for Pierre Vandensteen that source is MuscleMemory. Open any contest above and that page names its own source and links to it where the source is still reachable. That archive no longer answers at the addresses we hold, so it is credited by name here and not offered as a link.

Legacy

Continental European bodybuilding of this period is almost undocumented in English. Vandensteen won three Universe class titles and a Mr World, and there is nothing written about him anywhere that a reader is likely to find.

Sources

Competition placings on this page come from our own contest database and cover his record from 1957 to 1978.

Contests of this era awarded a height or weight CLASS title and then a separate OVERALL title, and several also gave a Most Muscular award. In the table below, a class win and an overall placing at the same contest are both correct and are not a contradiction, and a Most Muscular row is an award given at that contest rather than a win of it.

In 3 meetings, Franco Columbu finished ahead of Pierre Vandensteen 2 times to 1.

Opponents are ranked by how often they shared a stage and how big the stage was, not by reputation. A meeting is one contest where both competed in the same division and both were placed.
