The bodybuilding community lost another gentle soul who made an unforgettable impact on athletes in her presence. On April 5, 2025, news of IFBB Pro Cynthia James’ peaceful passing was made public, courtesy of the CJ’s Elite Competition Suits handle on Instagram.

Details around her death haven’t been revealed, though in late 2024, she came down with pneumonia and went into congestive heart failure. She was prescribed the wrong medication and was forced into a hospital stay, and at the time, she expressed gratitude for being alive.

In addition to leading a decorated amateur and IFBB Pro career in the Women’s Bodybuilding division, she was a savvy businesswoman. She founded CJ’s Elite Competition Suits & GLAM Competition Jewelry/Accessories in 1996, which saw her tailor countless attires for the most elite bodybuilding competitors in the world, including names like former seven-time Mr. Olympia Phil Heath, Dexter Jackson, and Derek Lunsford. She was also an established IFBB Pro judge and helped shape the future of the sport.

The bodybuilding industry has had to watch other notable figures in the sport leave too soon. Jerry Ward, a credentialed NPC and IFBB Pro judge, sadly lost his life at just 46 years old. The cause of death wasn’t revealed.

James touched the lives of everyone she came in contact with. Our team at Fitness Volt wishes her family and friends condolences and peace during this difficult time.
