Jay Cutler Explains ‘Cycling On & Off,’ Talks Testosterone Dosages Used Now vs During Career

Cutler openly discussed his use of testosterone and performance-enhancing drugs through the years: "If I felt I didn't need a certain this or that, I didn't do it."

Bodybuilding legend Jay Cutler is an open book in retirement even when it comes to the sport’s most sensitive topics. In a recent episode of the Cutler Cast Podcast, Cutler discussed how his cycles and testosterone dosages have changed over time, from his competitive days to his current lifestyle.

Establishing himself as a Men’s Open frontrunner in the 2000s, Cutler made a career out of defying expectations. After a number of runner-up performances at the Olympia, Cutler’s perseverance finally paid off in 2006 when he dethroned the eight-time champion Ronnie Coleman.

Inspired by his rival’s training practices, Cutler used whatever he could to gain an edge over his competition, whether it was training late at night or consuming 140 eggs on a daily basis. These measures resulted in Cutler capturing four Mr. Olympia titles.

“The Comeback Kid” retired in 2013 but his passion for bodybuilding never left. In addition to being a top role model in the sport, Cutler has made it his mission to stay in great shape. Late last year, he committed to a physique transformation. The former four-time Mr. Olympia ensured fans that he would only use testosterone replacement therapy en route to building his best look in ten years.

The results were stunning. At 50 years old, Cutler looks ripped and conditioned. He celebrated his birthday at the Musclecontest Fit Expo where he guest posed alongside current Men’s Open competitor Regan Grimes. In his latest venture, Cutler discussed his past cycles and TRT use with Milos Sarcev.

“I’m Going to Get Better & Better Now” – Jay Cutler Talks Gear + Testosterone Doses w/ Milos Sarcev

Cutler explained that he’s using 200 milligrams of test a week whereas Sarcev never dips below 1,000 milligrams.

“I’m going to get better and better now. I know we were arguing last time and Greg Doucette, shout out to our buddy Greg Doucette, did a big story on us. Yeah he did a story on TRT. And Milos’ suggested dosage like test levels,” shared Cutler.

“I talked today to Dennis, he was on 450, I said that should be illegal,” said Milos Sarcev.

“You said, I said with 300 would it be okay,” asked Cutler. “You said it would be for a female. And Greg agrees with you, like a 1,000 is a roundabout number but, yeah [high normal] it is. I think 800 is like 700-800 is probably what would be a comfortable [number].”

“I never went under 1,000 nor do I plan to,” replied Sarcev.

When he gets a blood test, Cutler plans to prove that he only uses 200 milligrams or less of test a week. Then, Cutler detailed coming on and off cycles throughout his career. He highlighted that he removed testosterone from his protocol a few weeks before each contest.

“What do you think mine is at today? I was not 2,800. Will you please tell him it was 2,000? It wasn’t – okay. I am getting a blood test done which I will share with you. I guarantee it’s a lot lower. I know but I don’t care. I’m going to show that I did a 12-week stint [of TRT] I really only did a CC a week, honestly, half and half. I just have got to be careful not to – no it’s 200 [milligrams].”

“What do they call it now, super supps,” added Cutler. “But remember, when I come off cycle, okay, if we took breaks through the year I’m talking like full-blast being a professional bodybuilder. You’re still going to have some sort of – something in your system right? Very rarely, although right after a show, not kidding Milos, I was tested and I was at 70 like a week after I came off for the show.

Remember, I didn’t use testosterone the last weeks. I would use like a Primo or Winstrol, or whatever, I didn’t use testosterone, not any test, not prop, not anything, right. Weeks. Weeks. Weeks, like 6-8 weeks [off]. I’ve done it different ways. Not to say I’ve done it every way, we’ve talked about the 80-50 right? I did that for my last two Olympias, 09, 10, was that kind of dosage. I never did it before then, I was afraid, I was holding too much water back then.”

Even though Cutler ‘cycled off’ gear, he mentioned that it didn’t mean he was completely off compounds as he acknowledges that they can stay in the body for weeks or months.

“I had to figure out that anti-ease, which I told you I didn’t use for a lot of the shows. When we cycled off for 12 weeks, 20 weeks, of course, there’s still going to be stuff in our system, right? When we say off, meaning just like I’m not taking anything at that point.”

“I don’t have a journal like your’s dude, like okay, this is what I took. I don’t have all that. And every time, it was dependent on what was available and how my body was reacting. If I felt I didn’t need a certain this or that, I didn’t do it.”

Finally, the Massachusetts native looked back on some of the work it took to transform his physique for his ‘Fit-for-50’ challenge.

“For 12 weeks I was on six meals. I trained consistently. I started cardio again. Ask me how I feel – I do feel better at 232 than I did at 245, meaning I feel more energetic. So maybe that’s a side but at the same time, if you said how do you feel in the gym are you stronger? No, I don’t do any more weights. I recover the same. My appetite is definitely way more now. Dude 90 minutes of cardio a day is a lot.”

This wasn’t Jay Cutler’s first update regarding his use of TRT. Months ago, the bodybuilding icon revealed that he was consistently using 200 milligrams of testosterone, and judging by his latest admission, that dosage hasn’t increased.

Even if Jay Cutler is using ‘super supplements’ to fuel his workouts at 50, it doesn’t change the fact that years of hard work, dedication, and grit were key factors that contributed to his physique, which has stood the test of time.
