Longevity and anti-aging remedies remain top priorities for bodybuilding legend Arnold Schwarzenegger at 77. In a recent edition of the Arnold’s Pump Club Newsletter, shared on November 20, 2024, he unveiled his ‘anti-wrinkle diet,’ designed to give you healthier and younger-looking skin. 

We all get older and no one is immune to Father Time, including Arnold Schwarzenegger. While he once dominated the bodybuilding landscape as a seven-time Mr. Olympia champion, Schwarzenegger now enjoys a life of retirement. 

And while he looks tremendous for his age, that wasn’t by accident. Schwarzenegger has utilized every resource within arm’s reach to appear and feel young. His goal is to reach 100 years old and believes dieting could be the secret to a longer life.

“The Anti-Wrinkle Diet
They say, “You are what you eat,” and that advice might be more valuable than most of the expensive anti-aging solutions.

Research suggests a healthy diet could be more effective than creams and lotions at giving you healthier, younger-looking skin.”

As we age, the production of collagen and elastin decreases — this can result in more wrinkles over time. Even though genetics and sun exposure factor into skin health, Schwarzenegger examined a study that measures how dietary choices can influence the development of wrinkles. 

“While genetics and sun exposure are well-known factors in skin aging, this study aimed to understand how dietary choices influence the development of wrinkles.

This study analyzed data from more than 2,700 women over the age of 50, assessing both their dietary habits and the degree of facial wrinkling. Participants were evaluated based on a diet quality score, reflecting how closely their diets adhered to healthy guidelines, including fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins. The researchers then compared diet quality scores to the presence and severity of wrinkles.”

In this study, women who followed a healthy diet saw ‘significantly fewer’ facial wrinkles, suggesting that nutrition plays a key role in slowing visible aging. 

“Women who followed a healthy diet have significantly fewer facial wrinkles, suggesting that nutrition could play a key role in slowing visible aging. Even after controlling for age, smoking status, and sun exposure, the results still held up, suggesting that diet directly influences skin aging.”

What Foods Make Up The Anti-Wrinkle Diet? 

  • Fruits 
  • Vegetables 
  • Fish 

Diets rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and healthy fats from fruits, vegetables, and fish can help protect the skin from oxidative stress, a primary driver of aging. 

“More specifically, diets rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and healthy fats—from sources like fruits, vegetables, and fish—appeared to have the strongest association with fewer wrinkles. These nutrients may help protect the skin by reducing oxidative stress, one of the main factors in aging.”

What Foods Should You Avoid on the Anti-Wrinkle Diet? 

  • Processed foods 
  • Refined sugars 
  • Unhealthy fats 

Conversely, highly processed foods, refined sugars, and unhealthy fats appear to impact aging negatively. 

“On the other hand, diets high in processed foods, such as refined sugars and unhealthy fats were associated with more pronounced wrinkling. This doesn’t mean you can’t ever eat these foods. However, if they are consumed more often — or make up the majority of our diet — it does appear to impact aging.”

This wasn’t bodybuilding expert Arnold Schwarzenegger’s first time offering an anti-aging secret for healthier skin. He credits sweating as one of the best methods for preserving skin health, so the next time you work out, make it count. 

“A little bit of sweat might be the skincare solution you didn’t realize you needed. Recent research suggests that the best way to have more youthful skin might be a consistent workout routine.” 

From training tips to reversing the aging process, Schwarzenegger continues to impart valuable advice to his followers. If your aim is clearer, healthier, and younger skin, try adhering to his anti-wrinkle diet to see if it works for you.
