Dorian Yates Breaks Down 3 ‘Basic Things You Need to Do’ To Get in Shape

Bodybuilding icon Dorian Yates hasn’t forgotten the fundamentals that helped him dominate the sport. In a recent Instagram post shared on June 12, 2025, he shared three basic training and nutrition tips for getting in shape. 

Yates led a one-of-a-kind career in the Men’s Open. Following Lee Haney‘s eight-year reign, Yates took control of the Mr. Olympia stage. He secured six consecutive titles at the prestigious contest despite facing injuries like a torn bicep and tricep. 

Yates used an intense training system he adopted from Mike Mentzer and Arthur Jones to reach his full potential. The program focused on pushing sets to failure rather than sticking to a set number of reps and sets. Even in retirement, his physique has stood the test of time, and he boasts exceptional longevity at 63 years old. While it’s been years since he’s competed, Yates still sports a shredded six-pack along with a massive back and lower body. 

3 Simple Tips from Dorian Yates To Get in Shape

These are the tips Yates discussed in his recent Instagram post: 

1. Train hard with a plan
2. Eat well and have the correct nutrition
3. Be consistent and keep notes

“Nothing complicated, applied consistency and #CreateALegacy” 

Yates elaborated on how to achieve lasting success with these three tips: 

“Number one is you need to do resistance training to build muscle mass and to build strength. That’s going to elevate your metabolism. And, of course, you got to back that up with the correct nutrition, the right amount of protein, calories, and being consistent with it. That’s the third thing: You got to be consistent with it.

So you got to have a plan. You’ve got to know what you’re doing, why you’re doing it. Plan out resistance training, plan out your diet, and be consistent with it and keep notes so you can adjust more or less for the diet and things like that. That’s it basically. We can make that very complicated or not, but those are the basic things that you need to do,” explains Yates. 

Even since stepping away from competing, Yates is still racking up achievements. He was recently honored with Mr. Olympia’s commemorative 60th anniversary ring by head judge Steve Weinberger. Samson Dauda, the latest winner of the Mr. Olympia, also earned a ring in light of his big victory over Hadi Choopan and Derek Lunsford. 

Yates doesn’t hold back when it comes to helping fans. He believes training hard with a plan, careful nutrition, and especially consistency are keys to building a better physique.
