Bodybuilder Sergio Oliva Jr. has set his sights on some ambitious plans for next year. In an Instagram post, Oliva Jr. showed off his latest chest and arms workout as he continues to receive special training insight from former six-time Mr. Olympia Dorian Yates.
Aside from Lee and Hunter Labrada, there aren’t many father-son duos in the sport of bodybuilding. While Sergio Oliva, a former three-time Olympia titleholder, has passed, Oliva Jr. has carried the iron torch, having made an impact as a credible Men’s Open competitor.
Aiming to build his own legacy, Oliva Jr. quickly found success in the IFBB Pro League. He has competed at esteemed events like the Arnold Classic and New York Pro, pushing names such as Mamdouh “Big Ramy” Elssbiay, Dexter Jackson, and William Bonac.
In March, Oliva Jr.’s bodybuilding comeback was put on hold after he was involved in a traffic collision which resulted in the loss of life. Oliva Jr. served jail time under poor conditions in Dubai, describing the ordeal as the ‘worst experience of his life.’

Just a few months later, Oliva Jr. flew to the West Coast and finished third at the 2023 California State Pro. Even though he sported enough mass, fans were left with questions about Oliva Jr.’s ability to get shredded. Taking these concerns into consideration, Oliva Jr. teamed up with one of the best talents to ever compete in the Men’s Open.

Check out some snippets from his training session with Yates below:
“Got the BLOOD🩸 working on the GUTS” wrote Sergio Oliva Jr.
Having incorporated techniques and tendencies from the late Mike Mentzer and Arthur Jones, Yates routinely pushed to failure during his workouts. Made famous for his intense ‘blood and guts’ high-intensity interval training, Yates was a pioneer of muscle-building. While his style of training was often criticized for being too extreme on the body, Yates’ longevity and current health are a testament to the quality of his practices
This wasn’t Oliva Jr.’s and Yates’ first training session together. In October, the bodybuilding community was thrilled to see Yates pushing Oliva Jr. through his patented back workout, which consisted of just three exercises: lat pulldown machine, seated cable row machine, and barbell Romanian deadlifts. Yates was able to offer Oliva Jr. invaluable workout advice during this session.
Initially, Oliva Jr. announced that the 2024 Arnold Classic would be his next destination, though the roster was made official last week, and his name was not on the list. However, there were a few bodybuilders who jumped into the AC on short notice last year like Nick Walker and Big Ramy, so it’s still possible we could see Oliva Jr. on stage in Columbus, Ohio.
Should Sergio Oliva participate in the 2024 Arnold Classic, he will face a who’s who of the Open class. Reigning 2023 Arnold Classic champion Samson Dauda will be in attendance on the hunt for a second trophy. Meanwhile, Andrew Jacked, Rubiel “Neckzilla’ Mosquera, and many others have big plans for March.
