At 51 years old, Jay Cutler‘s made some tweaks to his diet and training for longevity. In a recent YouTube video aired on July 21, 2025, he discussed bodybuilding veterans staying in shape, his go-to breakfast, and gave his thoughts on Ronnie Coleman’s battle with sepsis.

Cutler, a former four-time Mr. Olympia champion, hasn’t let his fitness go since laying down his posing trunks. However, the way he approaches weights, cardio, and even nutrition has significantly changed. Cutler no longer desires to weigh more than 250 pounds, and with that in mind, he’s making changes to stay lean and muscular in retirement.

Jay Cutler Back to Fasted Cardio, Talks Go-To Breakfast, Retired Pros Staying in Shape, & Ronnie Coleman

In the video, Cutler explained that he’s reintroduced fasted cardio for 20 minutes a day.

“I get up and do fasted cardio every morning. I’m back to doing 20 minutes, well I fell out for a while, I stopped. Now, I’m back to doing it, and to be honest, I can go — you know me, my appetite in the morning, I can probably go till noon without eating.”

He notes that training and dieting have changed in his 50s; he no longer eats a 100-gram protein breakfast daily.

“If you ask me what’s different in my 50s, and I feel like my body, I feel like I’m still staying in good shape. I’ve definitely lost some muscle mass, and that’s kind of on purpose right, I don’t eat the 100-gram protein breakfast anymore.”

His new go-to breakfast at 51 is two whole eggs and a scoop of protein powder. Cutler revealed he’s tipping the scales at 225 pounds currently.

“I’m going to have the liquid egg whites, but normally, I have two whole eggs and I just have a scoop of my protein pretty much and that’s been my go-to,” he said. “For the first time ever I feel like my metabolism doesn’t demand because I think I lost the muscle mass. I’m only 225 now.”

He also spoke on retired bodybuilders staying in shape, including Dexter Jackson, Kevin Levrone, Dorian Yates, Lee Labrada, and Rich Gaspari.

“I still look at a lot of pictures and videos of Dexter, and I’m shocked at how big he really was but I still think Dexter looks good. I think he looks good right now. I think Levrone looks really good.

I think Yates looks good for a retired Pro. Look at Labrada, Labrada looks unbelievable. I think Rich Gaspari still trains pretty hard.”

Cutler mentioned that Coleman will be okay following his life-threatening battle with sepsis.

“A lot of the former champs, if they didn’t end up with something health-wise, and I mean health-wise, injuries or whatever else.

Obviously, Ronnie, Ronnie is in good shape but look at his, well he just had a mishap with his health and with sepsis and all that stuff but he’s still in the gym training, he just can’t walk. He’s going to be okay.”

Cutler’s been open and honest about how he achieved such a legendary physique in his prime. Recently, he broke down how he managed to grow 20-inch calves at the height of his career. He credited the standing calf raise as essential for growth.

Cutler has tailored his training and nutrition to boost longevity. He aims to continue sporting a lean and muscular physique in retirement.
