The bodybuilding community is coming to grips with another crushing loss. On Jan. 13, 2026, it was confirmed by relatives that Arlindo de Souza, better known as ‘Brazilian Popeye,’ had died at 51. He had many nicknames throughout his life, including ‘Arlindo Anomalia’ and ‘Arlindo Montanha.’ As of this writing, no cause of death has been revealed.
Born in Olinda, Pernambuco, Souza quickly attracted attention for his unusual physique. He was publicly open about his use of site enhancement oils like synthol. This has led to lively debates about the safety and health risks in the sport today.
After years of artificially enhancing his physique, Souza came to terms with the risks. He began to warn young talent who could be easily influenced. These synthetic fillers have stirred controversy in the IFBB Pro League. Even reigning Mr. Olympia titleholders Derek Lunsford and Natalia Abraham Coelho have faced accusations.
Souza’s pursuit of size was always a priority. He managed to grow his arms to a massive 29 inches. While it remains unclear what caused his death, fans speculate that using these drugs could have contributed to his health decline.

Synthol has remained a hot topic in the sport. Bodybuilding legend Milos Sarcev used it to increase his biceps size. He’s adamant that it was the single biggest regret of his career. Other athletes, such as Flex Wheeler, have been open about the harm synthol can cause. ‘The Sultan of Symmetry,’ who had his leg amputated, shared that his rival, Kevin Levrone, also used it.
Souza hasn’t been the only individual to take synthol use to the next level. ‘Synthol Kid’ Kiril Tereshin has become famous for his shocking use of site enhancements. He has feared for his life due to the habit, and doctors have considered amputating his arms. Tereshin didn’t just enhance his arms; he also got ‘alien’ face injections to change his appearance.
The sport of bodybuilding has seen an alarming number of deaths shake up the scene. During peaceful anti-government protests in Iran, bodybuilding champion Mehdi Zatparvar was shot and killed. It’s been an ongoing trend, with IFBB Pro LaMarcus Morris dying at 29 and Wang Kun passing away at just 30 years old recently.
With time, perhaps we will hear what caused Souza’s death. Fitness Volt extends our well-wishes and condolences to his friends and family.
