Classic Physique was introduced in 2016 as a division for competitors built along older lines, lighter and more proportioned than the modern open class. Hester had been competing in exactly that shape since 1992, which is why a man in his late forties beat a field of competitors half his age to the inaugural title.
He won the MuscleContest Pro in the same season, then finished fifth at the 2017 Olympia and twelfth in 2018 and 2019 as the division filled with younger competitors built specifically for it.
Early career
His recorded career opens in 1992 and runs to 2019, twenty-seven years. Most of it was spent in the lighter open classes: he won the Border States Classic in 2006, the Musclemania Worlds in 2007 and the Los Angeles Championships in 2010.
Then the sport invented a division that matched what he had been doing all along, and he won it at the first attempt.

Legacy
Classic Physique is now one of the largest divisions in the sport and its champions are household names within it. The first one was a 47-year-old who had been competing since 1992, which is a better story than the division has generally told about itself.
Hester's later placings dropped as the class professionalised around him. That is not a decline so much as a measurement of how quickly the division changed.
