Lee Labrada mastered nutrition to etch his name into bodybuilding history. In a YouTube video on March 25, he discussed the health drawbacks of skipping protein.
Despite being outweighed by up to 50 pounds, Lee Labrada still led an illustrious career in the Men’s Open class. While he never laid claim to the prestigious Mr. Olympia title, he came close. He, alongside Rich Gaspari, gave former eight-time Olympia champ Lee Haney some of his greatest tests onstage.
In retirement, Labrada boasts exceptional longevity. He’s still ripped, trains, and eats clean, setting the standard for Hunter Labrada, who has followed in his footsteps. Though we know skipping protein can hamper progress, Labrada is providing more insight into why this macronutrient is key for healthy living.
Lee Labrada Talks Skin, Immune, Hormone Benefits of Protein, Warns Against Skipping It
In the video, Labrada noted that skipping protein can ruin gym progress because the muscles need it for repair post-training.
“Can skipping protein slow down your progress? The answer is absolutely true, it can slow down your progress. The reason for that is that your body uses protein for repair, to repair the muscles after training.”
He shared that protein helps the body run smoothly, from hormone production and skin health to a strong immune system:
“It uses protein for a number of health-related things, like producing hormones, keeping your skin healthy, your immune system healthy, so protein is vital. And if you skip your protein, you’re setting yourself up for problems, and you’re going to slow your progress down,” Lee Labrada shared.
Not all bodybuilders from the 1980s have reaped the same health benefits as Labrada. His rival, Haney, has been dealt a tough health challenge recently. It was revealed by his family members that one of his kidneys is failing. He hopes to find a live donor and has offered to cover all medical costs.
Beyond the stage lights, Labrada continues to test himself with intense training sessions. He recently teamed up with Branch Warren for an old-school arm pump workout. They also discussed the current state of the Men’s Open division.
Lee Labrada doesn’t underestimate consistent protein intake. Whether it’s bigger muscles, strength, or a more robust immune system, it’s essential for every gymgoer.
