The large part of the 2022 NOBULL CrossFit Games has passed, but the final two days are set to be packed with the most action so far. Coming into day four, both Individual and Teams divisions will face three challenges. In addition, apart from the higher ranked competitors battling for position, the lower ranked competitors will also look to qualify for the final day of competition. After today’s session is finished, the Individual divisions will be cut down from 40 to 30, while only 20 out of 38 Teams will go through.

Tia-Clair Toomey is waking up as the leader of the women’s division for the first time heading into day four of the 2022 NOBULL CrossFit Games. She managed to overtake Mal O’Brien and build a massive points difference very quickly. Ricky Garard managed to defend his lead from event one for the past three days, but yesterday was his worst day of the competition, which enabled Justin Medeiros and Roman Khrennikov to get back into contention. The Teams division saw CrossFit Mayhem Freedom win both events yesterday, so they will attempt to continue their streak on day four.

  • 50-yard swim
  • 8-cal Ski Erg*

*Add 2 calories each round for 6 rounds, then complete as many calories as possible for rounds 7 and 8.

Women’s division

  • Lucy Campbell — 138 calories
  • Amanda Barnhart — 134 calories
  • Laura Horvath — 133 calories
  • Tia-Clair Toomey — 131 calories
  • Kara Saunders — 130 calories
  • Haley Adams — 129 calories
  • Matilde Garnes — 129 calories
  • Mallory O’Brien — 128 calories
  • Arielle Loewen — 128 calories
  • Brooke Wells — 127 calories

While the majority of the field struggled on the swim portion of the event, one of the rookies, Lucy Campbel, used her perfect swimming technique to relax and leave all her energy on the Ski Erg. Another amazing swimmer, Amanda Barnhart, utilized the same technique and finished in second place. The third place finisher, Laura Horvath, overtook Tia-Clair Toomey in the final minute on the Ski Erg.

Men’s division

  • Roman Khrennikov — 160 calories
  • Dallin Pepper — 156 calories
  • Jonne Koski — 154 calories
  • Samuel Kwant — 153 calories
  • Lazar Đukić — 152 calories
  • Brent Fikowski — 152 calories
  • Justin Medeiros — 151 calories
  • Cole Greashaber — 148 calories
  • Cole Sager — 148 calories
  • Ricky Garard — 147 calories

After years of not being able to compete at the CrossFit Games because of travel restrictions, Roman Khrennikov managed to win an event in front of a live audience. Roman sacrificed a lot and even missed the birth of his son, so he deserves to enjoy the moment. Khrennikov battled with Dallin Pepper throughout the entire event, with Jonne Koski squeezing into that third place position.

Workout 9 — Hat Trick

3 rounds for total time of:

  • Sprint
  • 20 wall-ball shots
  • 6 dumbbell snatches

Rest 4 minutes between rounds

Women: 14-lb ball to 11 ft / Snatch 70-lb DB

Men: 20-lb ball to 12 ft / Snatch 100-lb DB

Women’s division

  • Ellie Turner — 03:55.94
  • Mallory O’Brien — 04:04.66
  • Tia-Clair Toomey — 04:08.12
  • Danielle Brandon — 04:08.80
  • Kara Saunders — 04:10.73
  • Gabriela Migała — 04:15.81

  • Laura Horvath — 04:19.41
  • Emma Lawson — 04:20.22
  • Amanda Barnhart — 04:20.61

Ellie Turner grabbed a valuable 100 points, as she moved to 23rd place overall, which will enable her to compete tomorrow if she does not fall in the rankings. Mal O’Brien came second and hoped to see Tia-Clair make some unfathomable mistakes, but Toomey finished just one place behind her.

Men’s division

  • Guilherme Malheiros — 02:30.07
  • Justin Medeiros — 02:39.84
  • Dallin Pepper — 02:43.10
  • Nick Mathew — 02:44.77

  • Jay Crouch — 02:49.17
  • Brent Fikowski — 02:49.38
  • Patrick Vellner — 02:49.93

Guilherme Malheiros is what the perfect balance between power and speed looks like, so this event was like tailored towards his abilities. Ricky Garard messed up once again, which meant that Justin Medeiros took over the top position overall despite not winning an event yet.

Workout 10 — Sandbag Ladder

1-rep-max sandbag-to-shoulder

Women: Bags from 160-250 lb

Men: Bags from 240-340 lb

Women’s divison

  • Dani Speegle — 250-lb

  • Emma McQuaid — 210-lb
  • Tia-Clair Toomey — 210-lb

Dani Speegle won the final event of day four, but Jacqueline Dahlstrøm stole the crowd’s sympathies, as she lifted a sandbag that is almost 100 lb heavier than her bodyweight to the shoulder. Laura Horvath was expectedly also in the top three of this strength and technique-based event. Regarding the title race, Tia-Clair Toomey got a significantly better placing than Mal O’Brien, so she will be waking up on the final day feeling relaxed.

Men’s division

  • Guilherme Malheiros — 340-lb (T-first)
  • Nick Mathew — 340-lb (T-first)
  • Brent Fikowski — 340-lb

  • Tim Paulson — 320-lb

Guilherme Malheiros and Nick Mathew somehow managed to tie for first place even after the tiebreaker. During the tiebreaker both men threw three progressively heavier sandbags over a bar and crossed the finish line in a time of 0:08.23. Brent Fikowski occupied the third place position having beated Jayson Hopper in the same tiebreaker.

On day four, CrossFit Mayhem Freedom does exactly what they did on day three. Mayhem Freedom burnt 533 calories combined in an event that required incredible pacing and conditioning. This was Freedom’s third consecutive win, giving them a huge lead over CrossFit Oslo Navy Blue, who placed ninth. Despite Freedom being the top team, CrossFit Reykjavik is giving everything they have to get into the top three. In addition, CrossFit Selwyn is doing the same, so no one appears to be safe.

The CrossFit Mayhem Freedom team achieved absolute perfection by winning their fourth event in a row. Despite the tight first two days, Mathem Freedom reached a whole new level yesterday and continues to do so today. Having beaten the second-place finishers, CrossFit Reykjavik, by over a minute, another title looks very likely.

After winning all events on day three of the 2022 CrossFit Games, CrossFit Mayhem Freedom also won all the events on day four of the competition. With this incredible accomplishment, Mayhem Freedom almost secured another CrossFit Games victory. The last two events are tomorrow, but it’s hard to see a team as experienced as Freedom mess this up..
