Bodybuilding coach Charles Glass continues to impart wisdom to those looking to maximize their training results. On February 12, 2025, he broke down the best rep ranges for losing fat and growing muscle.

Charles Glass is known as the ‘Godfather of Bodybuilding,’ having shaped countless IFBB Pros to bring their best to the stage. In addition to guiding names such as Chris Cormier, Dexter Jackson, the late Shawn Rhoden, Dennis James, and Brandon Curry, he’s also assisted celebrities with picture-perfect physiques including Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, ‘Hollywood’ Hulk Hogan, and Wesley Snipes.

Glass made a name for himself in the fitness sector with his specialized workout routines. He also pays close attention to form cues, mechanics, and angles, giving lifters insight into how the body reacts to specific exercise demands for optimal results. This time around, he shed light on ideal rep ranges not only for adding mass but also for boosting fat loss results.

“It depends on the person. I may go from 10-15 depending on the way it works,” he explains. “No [there’s not an exact science]. It depends on what you want you’re [trying to do], are you trying to stay tight or are you trying to grow?”

If growth is the primary concern, he advocated for 10-12 reps. Conversely, for those looking to shred down, he said to aim for up to 20 reps.

“I would go anywhere from 10-12 reps [if you want to grow],” he shared. “It’d be up to like 20 reps [if you want to tighten and shred].”

Building muscle can be a daunting task for some, which has led Charles Glass to also discuss what is the best protein source for getting the job done. He favors chicken most, especially after training but also said for extra muscle-building potential, follow it up with beef. As for his number one exercise for building muscle, he credits the rowing machine for its utility.

With decades of experience helping shape various IFBB Pros and celebrities, Charles Glass offers unique insight into muscle building and losing fat. He stands by 10-12 reps for growing and up to 20 reps for aiding fat loss.
