The stacked 212 Olympia bodybuilding lineup just took a massive blow. In a September 22 post, news spread on social media that Courage Opara withdrew from the 2026 Mr. Olympia. The Bodybuilderswithoutboarders Instagram account was the first to report the story and shared that he pulled out due to rhabdomyolysis.

Standing out in the Men’s 212 Bodybuilding division has only gotten harder as athletes continue to raise the bar. Currently, reigning three-time 212 Olympia champion Keone Pearson is the man to beat. He dethroned Shaun Clarida back in 2023 and has held the crown since. Despite Opara’s dominant 2026 bodybuilding season, it looks like his title-winning ambitions will have to wait.

Bodybuilderswithoutboarders explained in the post that he was unable to fully recover in time for the Mr. Olympia.

“Sad to report that @courageopara pulled out a couple weeks back. He suffered from rhabdomyolysis and couldn’t fully recover in time for the Olympia. He won Tampa and Texas Pro this year, and was a top 5 Olympian last year,” shared the bodybuilderswithoutborders Instagram account.

What is Rhabdomyolysis?

Rhabdomyolysis is a condition where severe muscle breakdown releases substances into the bloodstream. Severe cases can lead to kidney damage and cause dangerous electrolyte problems. It can happen to bodybuilders for a handful of reasons, including extremely intense training, excessive volume, dehydration, and pushing the body beyond its capacity to recover. The side effects can be quite noticeable, from dark tea-colored urine and exhaustion to muscle pain and weakness.

Before disaster struck, Opara had built tremendous momentum in the Men’s 212 bodybuilding division. He carved out a fifth-place finish at the 2025 Olympia contest, having tested himself against Clarida and Pearson. In 2026, it appeared Opara was reaching his prime; he picked up back-to-back wins at the 2026 Tampa Pro and the Texas Pro. With some of the best proportions in the division, he would have been a major wildcard in Sin City.

Though the 212 Olympia lineup lost a top-five threat, it leaves room for another athlete to break into the final callout. The 2026 Mr. Olympia takes place from September 24-27 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Dan Solomon announced that the livestream is free, setting the table for a historic weekend. Our Fitness Volt team will have live results coverage coming your way when the event kicks off.
