Matt Greggo has new goals within his crosshairs. In an October 13 video, he confirmed his switch from Classic Physique into the stacked Men’s Open division.
For years, Greggo clawed his way to the top of the Classic Physique category. Known for competing often, he picked up serious momentum throughout the 2026 bodybuilding season. In addition to a pair of third-place finishes at the Tri-City and Tampa Pro, the 30-year-old star won gold at the Chicago Pro. While the victory set him up for a strong Olympia performance, Greggo missed the mark and fell to 16th.
Having trained with former two-time Mr. Olympia Derek Lunsford, Greggo has a leg up as he starts the next chapter of his career. However, before he jumps into deep waters, he admits packing on size will be a top priority.

In the video, Greggo explained that this decision wasn’t abruptly made. He was thinking about the switch for most of the year:
“I’m just going to move forward with this, with the signs I’ve been given. That was my decision there right away. It wasn’t like an emotional decision, or just because I didn’t place right, oh, this is what I’m going to do out of emotion. No, this is something I was thinking about all of 2026, and that is, I am going Open. I’m going to be an Open class bodybuilder. I’m going to be with the big boys onstage,” shared Greggo.
He compared the transition to back when he moved up from Men’s Physique into Classic.
“I’ll be honest. It’s kind of like Men’s Physique to Classic, damn, I feel like I’m starting over again. I know it’s not actually like that but it kind of feels that way to me, that I’m starting a new journey. I’m very excited about it. I feel like it’s going to be the best part of my career. You got to know that going to Open. It’s going to be a process.”
To be competitive, Greggo stressed that he’ll have to put on significant size, sharing that his ‘road to 300’ has officially begun:
“You can’t just think, oh, you know what? I’m going to do the Open and right then be smack-dab in the top-10 Open now like I was in Classic. That’s not realistic. Could it happen? I guess possibly it could happen, but is it likely? No. It’s going to be a multi-year process of getting better and better.”
“I definitely need a lot of size,” he added. “We’re actually doing the road to 300 now. It’s actually happening because it’s Open class time, baby. It’s fun to get big now. I haven’t had a real off-season since 2017.”
Interestingly, Greggo’s coach, Chris Aceto, also oversees preparations for Derek Lunsford and Andrew Jacked, two of the world’s best Men’s Open competitors. It will take some time for Greggo to pack on the necessary mass, but once he does, he could become a factor in the division.
