Bodybuilding great Rich Gaspari is calling attention to a gym mistake he sees too often. In an October 13 reel, he broke down why lifters should always prioritize mind-muscle connection if they truly want results.

Gaspari built his legacy during the 1980s and ’90s, squaring off against all-time greats. Although he never took out eight-time Olympia Lee Haney, he gave the champ some of his toughest tests onstage. Gaspari still reached incredible heights. During his career, “The Dragon Slayer” established himself as the inaugural Arnold Classic champion back in 1989.

Despite lacking elite-level genetics, Gaspari’s work ethic was unrivaled, and it showed onstage. He raised the standard in the Men’s Open class with shredded glute detail. While he’s retired from active competition, he still trains with the same methods that propelled him to the top.

In the Instagram post, Gaspari said avoiding distractions and focusing on mind-muscle connection during lifts can make or break progress.

“The thing in the gym is all about mind to muscle. You need to get that connection of your mind to the muscle when you’re training.”

“So if you’re training a muscle, you want to focus not on your phone, not on conversation with somebody, focusing on that set to make sure that you’re focusing on that body part that you’re training, whether it’s your chest or whether it’s your biceps, whether it’s your shoulders, that you feel the contraction, you feel when the muscle is extending.”

He went on to share that many lifters neglect mind-muscle connection in the gym and aren’t fully focusing on the body parts they want to grow:

“So many guys do not use that mind to muscle and they just go to the gym and they’re in the gym every day. I give it to em but they’re not focusing on training their body parts. So, they’re not changing,” he said. “By doing that, that mind-to-muscle connection, you’re going to get that muscle to grow. You’re going to see results with that muscle.”

“If you want to make changes in the gym, mind to muscle. You have that mind to muscle and you’re going to see changes that you’re going to see in your body that are going to change the way you look,” he said.

Rich Gaspari is far from the only top bodybuilder touting the benefits of mind-muscle connection. Former four-time Olympia titleholder Jay Cutler has sworn by the technique for decades. In his fifties, Cutler still utilizes mind-muscle connection to maintain his physique and health.

Rich Gaspari believes training without distractions is key to a better session. It allows lifters to focus on connecting with the targeted muscles to help with growth.
