Sad news has shaken up the bodybuilding community. In an October 14 Instagram post, the NPC Worldwide Chile account revealed that Women’s Physique competitor Marianne von Gierke has suddenly passed away.

Von Gierke was a proven name in the insanely competitive Women’s Physique category, currently led by three-time Olympia champion Natalia Abraham Coelho. Season to season, von Gierke was making consistent improvements, from sharper conditioning to more fullness in her quads.

In her first contest of 2026, she secured sixth place at the Texas Pro. She used the opportunity to refine her peak, and it paid off in her last two outings. Von Gierke was on everyone’s radar after clinching the prestigious Rising Phoenix Pro crown. Fans could tell she was on an upward trajectory. She moved up to 13th place at the recent Mr. Olympia contest, with many expecting her to keep climbing that ladder.

“Today we bid farewell with deep sorrow to a @mari.gierke.ifbbpro athlete who left an indelible mark on bodybuilding. We will remember her for her dedication, discipline and for bringing her talent to the stage of Mr. Olympia, leaving a legacy in her category and inspiring those who shared this passion with her.

Her effort, career and all that she achieved will remain in the memory of our sporting community. 🕊️

We send our deepest condolences to her family, loved ones, friends and everyone who is feeling her departure today. We accompany you with respect and affection at this difficult time.

May her legacy live on and may she rest in peace. 🖤,” the statement read.

The Women’s Physique division has seen other athletes die too soon. IFBB Pro Kristyn Lia passed away at just 39. The cause of death was never made public, though in one of her final interviews, Lia explained that she endured troubles with diuretics and fluid retention. The trend has bodybuilding legends speaking up. Arnold Schwarzenegger went on record saying that bodybuilding is the most dangerous sport in the world and sometimes kills people.

It’s unclear exactly what caused Marianne von Gierke’s death, but she’ll be remembered for doing what she loved. Our team at Fitness Volt sends her friends and family its condolences.
