You can be at peak strength on meet day and still leave kilograms on the platform through poor attempt strategy - or worse, bomb out entirely. The conventional wisdom says to open at 90% of your best. But does the data support that? What do successful 2nd attempts actually look like compared to failed ones? The 90% Opener Rule - What the Data Actually Shows

The "open at 90% of your max" rule is widely taught, but it is a rough approximation. Competition data reveals a more nuanced picture. Successful openers cluster tightly - most hit within a specific percentage band of that lifter's eventual best. Failed openers are consistently higher as a percentage of best, confirming the rule's logic but also revealing that the optimal range is narrower than most coaches suggest.

Equipped lifters (single-ply, multi-ply) follow different patterns than raw lifters - the technical demands of equipment handling mean conservatism pays off even more on openers. Weight class also matters: lighter classes tend to open slightly more aggressively than super heavyweights, likely because the relative weight of standard plate increments (2.5kg) is proportionally larger for lighter lifters.
