Comparing Powerlifting Federations: USAPL vs. USPA vs. WRPF vs. IPF
Choosing a powerlifting federation is one of the most important decisions a competitive lifter makes. The four most active federations in the English-speaking world - the USAPL, USPA, WRPF, and IPF - each occupy distinct niches based on drug testing philosophy, equipment rules, and competitive culture.
USAPL: The Tested Standard in America
USA Powerlifting is the IPF's national affiliate in the United States, making it the only American federation that qualifies athletes for IPF World Championships. All competitors must pass a drug test (urinalysis at nationals, polygraph at some events). The USAPL uses IPF weight classes and equipment standards, allowing only raw and single-ply divisions. Average DOTS scores in the USAPL tend to be lower than in untested federations, reflecting the drug-free environment - and the meaningful quality of performance comparisons within it.
USPA: High Volume, Tested and Untested
The United States Powerlifting Association runs more meets per year than any other American federation, with competitions nearly every weekend across all 50 states. The USPA offers both tested (USPA-D) and untested divisions within the same federation, giving lifters flexibility. Equipment rules are slightly more permissive than the IPF - thicker knee sleeves and certain wrist wraps are allowed. USPA does not restrict athletes from competing in other federations.
WRPF: The Fastest Growing Global Federation
The World Raw Powerlifting Federation originated in Russia and expanded into North America, Asia, and Europe. WRPF is untested and allows a wide range of equipment, which has made it a popular destination for lifters chasing big raw totals. Use the growth panel above to see how its recent entry volume compares with the prior three years.
IPF: The Olympic Standard
The International Powerlifting Federation is the only powerlifting body recognised by the International Olympic Committee. It enforces the strictest drug testing protocol in the sport - including out-of-competition testing - and the most restrictive equipment rules. Competing in the IPF (via a national affiliate like USAPL, CPU, or BP) is the only path to a World Championship title. Its athlete pool is genuinely drug-tested, making IPF totals and DOTS scores directly comparable within a controlled performance environment.
How to Choose a Federation
Use the comparison tool above to analyse any combination of federations side by side. Key factors to weigh: drug testing (does it matter to you?), equipment preference (raw vs. single-ply vs. multi-ply), meet frequency (how often do you want to compete?), and international ambitions (only IPF affiliates qualify for Worlds). Explore individual federation pages for detailed statistics, recent meets, and top lifters.
