Quinton Eriya Parts Ways With Coach Matt Jansen After Earning 6th Place at 2024 New York Pro: ‘This Was The Worst Showing I’ve Had’

"If you hire an event planner for an important event, and they fu** up the event, are you going to hire them again? Fu** no."

Quinton Eriya made some changes in his camp following his sixth-place finish at the 2024 New York Pro. In a series of Instagram story posts, Eriya revealed that he will no longer work with coach Matt Jansen, underlining that he looked small and worse on stage than two years ago.

“I ain’t hiring nobody bro. I might never work with a coach again,” said Quinton Eriya.

Following a stellar 2022 bodybuilding season which saw Eriya earn third at the Tampa Pro and fifth at the Texas Pro, many assumed that an extended off-season was all he needed to penetrate the upper echelon of the Open class.

So, that’s exactly what ‘Beastwood’ did. He took the entire 2023 season off to add quality tissue to his already impressive frame. Anticipation for his return only amplified in the lead-up to Steve Weinberger’s annual 2024 New York Pro. And while Eriya was thought of as a frontrunner for many, he ultimately underwhelmed in sixth place, outside of the first call-out.

Matt Jansen coached Nick Walker to gold and on the same night, guided Quinton Eriya. While Jansen has taken the blame for Eriya’s performance, the Open contender has made it clear that they are no longer working together.

Quinton Eriya Splits With Matt Jansen After Earning 6th Place at 2024 New York Pro: ‘Fu** Working With Coaches’

Having witnessed what Jansen has done for other athletes in the off-season, Eriya thought he would bring value to his preparations.

“I’ve seen the work Matt did with some of his athletes in the off-seasons like that’s the guy. That’s my guy. And the off-season was amazing man, the off-season was so good. And if you look at pictures or videos from the off-season you can see I put on a ton of tissue.

You know, I think everybody thought I was probably going to be a problem this year but at the end of the day, it’s not a battle of who looks best or who is heaviest in the off-season, it’s a battle of who looks best at the day of the show.”

Looking back at his 2024 New York Pro performance, Eriya described it as ‘the worst showing’ of his career, adding that he looked smaller and less conditioned.

“At the show, this was the worst showing I’ve had. I was worse than I was two years ago. I was smaller. My legs were skinny and I was less conditioned.

Listen, somewhere along the way, something got fucked up. Now if you hire an event planner for an important event, and they fuck up the event, are you going to hire them again? Fuck no.”

Initially, he thought about staying with Jansen, but still can’t wrap his head around how badly they missed the mark.

“On a personal level, of course, I wanted to, and that was the direction I was going at first, we’re going to do this, figure it out, but every day that went by I’m just like I don’t get how we missed this bad. Yeah, it’s upsetting. I’m extremely disappointed.”

For the time being, Quinton Eriya has no intention of working with another coach anytime soon.

“I think I’m leaving, I dont’ regret the decision because I think when I fell out I’ll finally be able to show all the work we put it in the off-season but fuck working with coaches bro. I’m not working with nobody bro. After what happened, and what I expected and shit going that wrong, you expect me to just jump into fucking with another coach? Hell no. I’m just being transparent and telling you guys what happened and keeping you guys in the loop of what’s going on in my life,” said Quinton Eriya.

This hasn’t been the first time that Matt Jansen has been involved in a contentious split with an athlete. In early 2022, Jansen and Nick Walker parted ways for unknown reasons. Many speculate that Jansen’s departure could have been influenced by issues related to supplement sponsors.

Others believe that Jansen wanted Walker to take time off and not compete in the 2022 Arnold Classic. Ultimately, Walker heeded this advice despite the two splitting up. Nevertheless, they later rejoined forces and work together to this day.

It’s uncertain when fans can expect to see Quinton Eriya back on a bodybuilding stage. However, judging by his latest admission, if he does compete, it won’t be with the help of any coaches.
