Bodybuilding legend Flex Wheeler is breaking his silence after a scary nine-day hospital stay. Speaking on Instagram (October 20, 2026), he reflected on the extreme pain that forced him to miss the 2026 Mr. Olympia. He also revealed that he got a new prosthetic leg and that his pain levels have plummeted.
For years, Wheeler suffered from an array of health issues, including blood clots and kidney failure. In 2019, doctors told him that he required an emergency amputation of his right leg. Despite the procedure upending his life, Wheeler has kept a positive outlook, continuing to serve as a top ambassador for the sport of bodybuilding.
From suicidal thoughts to struggling to walk, Wheeler has been open about his journey. Fans were unaware until now that the four-time Arnold Classic champ was fighting through intense pain as the world’s best IFBB Pros clashed in Las Vegas.
Flex Wheeler Reflects on 9-Day Hospital Stay Due to Extreme Pain, Gives Health Update After Getting New Prosthetic Leg
In the Instagram reel, Wheeler apologized to his fans and explained the circumstances that led to his nine-day hospital stay.
“First and foremost, I want to apologize to my fans and the Mr. Olympia committee. I picked up my VIP tickets Thursday, and unfortunately, I started experiencing some extreme pain, to the point where Thursday night, I had to be rushed to the hospital. They ended up keeping me for nine days.”
He shared that he received a new prosthetic leg and reported better-than-ever pain levels:
“It was pretty bad, but the good thing is that I’m good now. I have actually a new leg now that feels a lot better. My pain level is way, way down, probably the lowest it’s ever been since my amputation. Today, we were actually able to do our first leg workout. It’s probably been over a year and a half since I did legs.”
“That’s about it. I just wanted to give you guys an update,” shared Flex Wheeler.
Flex Wheeler no longer competes actively, but he’s given top bodybuilders a helping hand. He recently offered Classic Physique standout Wesley Vissers posing advice for the Mr. Olympia. His pointers paid off; Vissers managed to earn fourth, the highest Olympia placement of his career.
In the face of serious health struggles, Flex Wheeler maintains a positive mindset. Fans look forward to seeing him tackle training with a new prosthetic leg and less pain.
