Bodybuilding legend Frank Zane is still offering training and nutrition advice at 84. In a recent Instagram post (October 14, 2026), he broke down which foods to include and avoid when you’re preparing for a bodybuilding contest.
Frank Zane was a pioneer of the Men’s Open class. His stage presence, posing mastery, and conditioning set the standard. Zane routinely faced off against all-time greats, including Arnold Schwarzenegger, Franco Columbu, Robby Robinson, and Mike Mentzer. Before calling it a career, “The Chemist” earned three Mr. Olympia titles from 1977–1979.
Zane utilized unique methods in the IFBB Pro League to get his physique stage-ready. He banked on visualization and always saw himself winning before the event. The Pennsylvania native also used sunbathing as a natural diuretic to dry out his physique. In his latest offering, he explained the ins and outs of nutrition, touching on which foods can help or hinder progress.
Frank Zane Shares His Simple Nutrition Framework
In the Instagram post, Zane shared that you can’t out-train a poor diet. While prepping for contests, he said to avoid ultra-processed foods and sugars.
“You can’t out-train poor nutrition. When you’re prepping for a competition or simply want to look and feel your best, food matters. Too many ultra-processed foods and sugars can drain your energy and work against recovery.”
He added that it’s best to include quality protein, vegetables, complex carbs, healthy fats, and lots of water to help fuel the body for training.
“Choose quality protein, fruits, vegetables, complex carbs, healthy fats, and plenty of water. You don’t need perfection—just consistency. Fuel your body. Train with purpose,” Frank Zane shared.
Zane continues to offer bodybuilding competitors useful advice since retiring. He recently unpacked the pros and cons of competitive bodybuilding, laying out what it truly takes to achieve long-term success.
“Bottom line: competing can be worth it if you are truly prepared, but not competing yet can also be a smart decision if you need more time to build muscle, improve conditioning, or get your life in a better place for prep. The best choice is the one that sets you up for long-term success, not just a short-term challenge,” Frank Zane said.
With three Sandow trophies sitting in his home, Zane’s knowledge is backed up by real onstage experience. He believes maintaining a clean diet and avoiding ultra-processed foods is key anytime an athlete commits to a contest.
