With decades of experience on and off the competitive stage, Jay Cutler offers some of the best training advice within the bodybuilding community. On September 5, 2024, via Instagram, Cutler revealed why he incorporates chest flyes into his workout routine and demonstrated how to perform them properly.

From an early age, Jay Cutler knew he wanted to become one of the best bodybuilders the sport had to offer, and spoiler alert, he did. However, it took Cutler time to master his technique before ultimately landing the title of Mr. Olympia, four times to be exact, but we’ll get to that.

In order to reach the top, he had to get through bodybuilding greats such as Ronnie Coleman, who Cutler came second to four times before eventually dethroning ‘The King’ in 2006. While he was successful at defending in 2007, Cutler would unfortunately hit a bump in the road and lose his title to Dexter Jackson in 2008, but he didn’t allow that to hold him back.

The very next year, in 2009, Jay Cutler returned to the prestigious stage looking better than ever before. Using what is now deemed his iconic quad stomp pose, he avenged his loss, coining him the ‘Comeback Kid’ and making him the first person to ever win back the title, an honor he still holds to this day. Cutler would go on to defend one last time in 2010 before ultimately being taken out by Phil Heath.

Jay Cutler Reveals Why He Incorporates Chest Flyes And Demonstrates Proper Form

Nowadays, Cutler is retired and enjoying the fruits of his labors, but that doesn’t mean he has stepped away from the sport entirely. He still provides valuable insights regarding the bodybuilding community and shares his tried-and-true training tips with his fans.

Considering his impressive competition history, it is safe to say Jay Cutler has the inside scoop on building a title-winning physique. Cutler’s latest piece of advice offered on Instagram highlighted why he includes chest flyes in his workout routine.

“Alright, so chest fly machine, I’m gonna show this exercise is actually a free motion machine. Now, I prefer to do dumbbells versus cables, I guess this would be considered a pec deck, anything that keeps that tension, okay.”

Despite usually using dumbbells, Cutler explained that he opted for cable exercises like the chest fly to provide constant tension.

“I like doing more cable exercises when I’m really trying to focus on that concentration on the chest. Remember, when you’re doing free weights, you’re going to have some more momentum than you would with the cables where you can keep that constant tension.”

He made sure to demonstrate how to execute the exercise with proper form, emphasizing the importance of squeezing with each contraction.

“So, obviously, this machine is set up perfect for a chest fly, not to say I wouldn’t do dumbbells too, but really get that squeeze, that contraction, and just come forward. Squeeze the chest, okay. Each repetition. Not too deep, get that contraction, squeeze, and you do this for 12 repetitions, okay” Cutler said.

Cutler also shared possible variations for this movement, however, the main focus was on getting in a good range of motion and squeezing during the reps.

“Dumbbell variations, now you can do incline, you can do decline, you can do lying flat, I mean I’ve done it all throughout my career but more importantly just really feel the momentum, remember focus on the repetition range, get that squeeze, don’t go extremely heavy and you’ll be good.”
