Bodybuilding greats Ronnie Coleman and Phil Heath teamed up for an intense back workout. The bodybuilding stalwarts went through the workout with a playful demeanor and discussed different aspects of bodybuilding as they went along.
Ronnie Coleman and Phil Heath are among the most accomplished professional bodybuilders in the sport’s history. The duo has a combined record of 15 Mr. Olympia wins to their name, which is the rarest of the accomplishments. Ronnie Coleman is tied for the record of most Mr. Olympia wins (eight) with Lee Haney. He won the title from 1998 to 2005, defeating elite competitors like Jay Cutler, Dexter Jackson, Flex Wheeler, and Shawn Ray, to name a few.
The 59-year-old believed in training with extreme intensity. Although this training method helped him reach the absolute top of the sport, it took a toll on Ronnie’s body over time. However, the eight-time Mr. Olympia continues to live life with a positive attitude. Ronnie received the Arnold Classic Lifetime Achievement Award in 2021 for his massive contribution to the sport’s growth.
Meanwhile, Phil Heath brought a breath of fresh air to the Men’s Open division when he rose through the ranks. Over the last couple of decades, size has become one of the most important criteria to succeed in the division. However, Heath dominated his competition with superior proportions, aesthetics, and conditioning.
He took home the prestigious Mr. Olympia trophy seven consecutive times from 2011 to 2017. Heath has not competed professionally since the 2020 Olympia where he finished fourth. Although the talks of his return have made rounds in the bodybuilding community, ‘Gift’ recently reconfirmed that he is not looking forward to making a comeback.

Ronnie Coleman and Phil Heath go through a pull day
Phil Heath joined Ronnie Coleman in his gym during the 2023 Olympia competition. However, the video of the training session was posted on Ronnie’s YouTube channel recently. So without further delay, let’s check out the details of their joint back training session.
Overall, the workout consisted of the following exercises:
- Converging Lat Pulldown
- Medium Neutral Grip Lat Pulldown
- Seated Rows
- Machine Biceps Curls
- Dumbbell Concentration Curls
Converging Lat Pulldown
Phil Heath and Ronnie Coleman commenced the training session with a converging lat pulldown machine. They performed a few sets of the movement to work the latissimus dorsi muscles and took to another pulldown variation.
Medium Neutral Grip Lat Pulldown
The bodybuilder duo performed this variation of the lat pulldown next and took their turns to get a few good sets under their belts. They used the Panatta pulldown machine to execute this movement before moving on to a horizontal pulling movement.
Seated Rows
Horizontal pulling exercises contribute towards building a thick back and the bodybuilding legends proceeded to do a few sets of straight-back seated rows on a plate-loaded machine to stimulate the back muscles.
Machine Biceps Curls
Ronnie and Phil shifted their focus to working the biceps next and cranked out a few solid sets of machine biceps curls. The machine employed an EZ bar attachment to ensure that the arm moved at a more natural angle. After executing a few good sets of the exercise, the training partners advanced over to the final exercise of the day.
Dumbbell Concentration Curls
Concentration curls maximize muscle contraction which is a key component of achieving muscle hypertrophy. The training session concluded with a few sets of this bicep isolation movement. Both men performed a few sets of the exercise and called it a day in the gym.
Phil Heath and Ronnie Coleman have both moved on to a new chapter of their lives. While Ronnie has kept himself busy with a fast-growing YouTube channel, Heath recently announced that he will transform his physique in the months to come. It will be interesting to see how things play out.
