The ageless wonder Lee Labrada continues to offer insight into artistically crafting a physique. In his latest offering, Labrada shared key tips for improving vascularity as a bodybuilder.

“One of the questions that I get asked a lot is about vascularity. So, what is vascularity? Vascularity is a condition where a competitive bodybuilder has clearly visible veins just lying beneath the surface which adds a lot of significant detail to a physique.”

Having pushed titans of the sport to the brink of defeat, Lee Labrada‘s impact on the bodybuilding stage reverberates today. He placed in the top four at the annual Mr. Olympia contests for seven consecutive years, showcasing next-level symmetry, proportions, and most importantly, balance.

Through supplementation, training, and diet, Lee Labrada cemented his status as an all-time great, having battled with countless icons including former eight-time Mr. Olympia Lee Haney, Rich Gaspari, and former six-time Olympia titleholder Dorian Yates.

Since stepping away from the sport, Labrada has remained devoted to exercise and health. His son, Hunter Labrada, has followed in his footsteps and continues to enjoy a blossoming bodybuilding career. At 63 years old, Lee hasn’t slowed down in the gym and is now sharing wisdom on achieving a more vascular physique.

Lee Labrada Explains How To Improve Vascularity for Bodybuilders

While advanced and veteran bodybuilders may already have vascularity thanks to muscle maturity, Labrada shared that there are strategies to enhance it that are within your control.

“Now an advanced mature bodybuilder develops this over time as muscle maturity occurs. One of the things that I want to mention to you is that genetics, unfortunately, does play a role. Some people are just a little more vascular than others but there are strategies to enhance vascularity that are within your control.”

Labrada credits training style as a crucial tool for improving vascularity, underlining the need for heavy and intense workouts.

“One that comes to mind right away is training style. I think training style is crucial. You have to train heavy and intensely, that’s because when you train heavy and intensely the muscles strain.

Blood pressure goes up and it causes the veins and arteries to dilate and enlarge which makes them more pronounced.”

In between sets of heavy training for vascularity, Labrada will mix in lighter weights with more repetitions to flush blood through the muscle more effectively.

“One of the things I like to do is I like to follow the heavy training with a set of high repetitions. Just to give you an example, after doing heavy curls for my biceps for instance, I’ll switch over to a lighter weight and I’ll do higher repetitions, say 15-20 to flush the blood through the muscle and enhance the vascularity and really blow it out.”

In addition, Lee advocated for isometric contractions, which he described as ‘pushing the muscle under tension against an immovable resistance.’

“After the workout, here’s something you might try, isometric contractions, which is basically saying, pushing of the muscle under tension against an immovable resistance. This is an isometric contraction because what I’m doing is I’m tensing the bicep, I’m trying to complete a curl but I’m pushing down and holding it in a stationary position, locking the arm and straining.”

Oftentimes, athletes perform isometric contractions in between workouts because they practice posing.

“Competitive bodybuilders often do this instinctively because they’ll pose sometimes in the gym after the workout or even between sets and that kind of thing.”

Labrada also opened up on pre-workout nitric oxide, which can serve as a significant vascularity enhancer.

“If you utilize a pre-workout nitric oxide product, that’s a good thing. Using one before a workout can significantly enhance your vascularity.”

He believes that consuming six small meals daily, each high in protein, can help make vascularity more visible. This effect is especially pronounced when one limits their consumption of carbohydrates and fats.

“Consuming six small meals per day that are high in protein, low-to-medium and complex carbohydrates and low in fat is an approach which I used in order to get lean and thereby make my vascularity more visible.

This type of diet for me has helped me to burn fat. It helps to avoid bloating and it enhances the vascularity. Avoiding junk food and excessive fats and sugars is also key to maintaining a vascular appearance,” said Lee Labrada.

He adds that if achieving vascularity is something you’re looking for, a proper combination of training, nutrition, and supplementation is key.

“At the end of the day, vascularity is a critical aspect for a bodybuilder’s physique. If that is something that is desirable to you, you can achieve this through a proper combination of training, nutrition, and supplementation.”

This isn’t Lee Labrada’s first time offering bodybuilders useful advice for building a top-tier physique. He recently walked fans and athletes through how to train properly and effectively without suffering from devastating muscle tears. Most importantly, Labrada emphasized that heavy weights aren’t always the answer.

Having maintained an incredibly youthful physique for decades, it’s always a breath of fresh air hearing from Labrada. While genetics play a notable role, he believes these tools will help any bodybuilder on a mission to become more vascular.

“By following these guidelines you can enhance your vascularity and achieve a more defined and aesthetic physique.”
