How the Air Force PFRA is scored

The PFRA has four components. You do one event in each of the three fitness components, and your waist-to-height ratio scores the fourth. The charts are set by sex and by nine age groups, and the total is out of 100.

  • Cardiorespiratory2-mile run or 20 m HAMRUp to 50
  • Body compositionWaist-to-height ratioUp to 20
  • Muscular strengthPush-ups (1 minute) or hand-release push-upsUp to 15
  • Core enduranceSit-ups (1 minute), cross-leg reverse crunch or forearm plankUp to 15

A passing PFRA needs 75 points or more, with the cardio, strength and core components each at or above their lowest scoring row. Body composition has no minimum, but a waist-to-height ratio of 0.55 or above needs a body fat check before the result is final. See AFMAN 36-2905.

PFRA categories

Your total sets your category.

  • Excellent90 to 100 points
  • Satisfactory75 to 89.9 points
  • UnsatisfactoryUnder 75 points. Also Unsatisfactory when any component minimum is not met.

Air Force PFRA charts for men aged 25 to 29

Shown for men aged 25 to 29 until you score a test; then it follows your sex and age group. For each event, the result that earns the most points and the result on the lowest scoring row. For reps you need at least the figure shown, for times the time shown or faster, and for the waist-to-height ratio the ratio shown or lower. A result short of the lowest row scores 0.

How each PFRA component is tested

You choose one event in each of the three fitness components, and your waist and height give the fourth. AFMAN 36-2905 sets the form rules; the body composition row below gives the measuring rules your score depends on.

  • CardiorespiratoryThe 2-mile run, for time, or the 20-meter HAMR, scored by the number of shuttles you complete.
  • Muscular strengthPush-ups in 1 minute, or hand-release push-ups.
  • Core enduranceSit-ups in 1 minute, the cross-leg reverse crunch, or the forearm plank for time.
  • Body compositionYour waist measurement is three readings on bare skin at the midpoint between the lowest rib and the top of the hip bone, each rounded down to the half inch, then averaged and rounded down again. Height goes to the nearest half inch. The ratio is waist divided by height, cut off at two decimals rather than rounded.

Air Force PFRA questions

Why does this calculator not say Pass or Fail?

Two things decide the official category that the charts cannot settle. AFMAN 36-2905 sets a minimum for each fitness component, and a waist-to-height ratio of 0.55 or above calls for a body fat assessment that only your unit can take. So the calculator gives your points and leaves the category to the official test.

How are the points added up?

Each component scores on its own chart and the four add up to 100. A man aged 25 to 29 who runs 2 miles in 15:00 (46 points), has a 34-inch waist at a height of 70 inches (a ratio of 0.48, 20 points), does 40 hand-release push-ups (10) and 45 sit-ups (9.5) scores 85.5.

What if I score below the lowest row of a chart?

That component scores 0 (AFMAN 36-2905 para 3.7.4). The same man running 2 miles in 20:30, slower than the slowest time on his chart, would get 0 for cardiorespiratory fitness and 39.5 in all.

What happens with a waist-to-height ratio of 0.55 or more?

If you do not meet the PFRA standards, you take a body fat assessment, on an InBody scale or with a tape where no InBody is available. Meet the body fat standard (26 percent for men, 36 percent for women) and body composition counts as an exempt component; miss it and the PFRA is Unsatisfactory.

How often do airmen take the PFRA?

Every 6 months after an Excellent or Satisfactory result, and within 3 months after an Unsatisfactory one. Air Reserve Component members test every 12 months. Scored testing resumed on 1 July 2026.
