How the Marine Corps PFT and CFT are scored
Each test has three events, scored on tables set by sex and by eight age groups. An event earns up to 100 points, so each test is out of 300. Your total sets your class.
- 1st ClassPass235 to 300
- 2nd ClassPass200 to 234
- 3rd ClassPass150 to 199
- FailureBelow the minimum in any event, or under 150 in totalNone
You pass either test with at least 150 in total and at least the minimum in every event, which is worth 40 points, or 60 for women's pull-ups. The classes are the same on both tests.
Combat arms Marines
Since 1 January 2026, Marines in a combat arms PMOS take the PFT on the male tables for their age and must reach 210 points. A combat arms Marine who passes the PFT with fewer than 210 points keeps the pass. MARADMIN 613/25 puts that Marine on remedial physical training, with possible PMOS reclassification or promotion restriction, and no adverse or punitive action until further guidance. The rule covers the PFT only.
Marine Corps PFT points for men aged 21 to 25
Shown for men aged 21 to 25 until you score a test; then it follows your sex and age group. Each cell is the result you need to score at least that many points: do at least the reps or hold the plank at least as long as shown, and finish the run or row in the time shown or faster. Blank cells are scores an event cannot reach: push-ups top out at 70 points, and women's pull-ups start at 60.

How each PFT event is tested
You do all three events in one session of no more than two hours; your commanding officer sets the order. Active Component Marines take the PFT between 1 January and 30 June each year.
- Pull-upsFrom a dead hang with straight arms, pull until your chin is above the bar, then lower to straight arms again. Palms may face forward or back. Kicking, kipping or swinging to help the pull does not count. The event is not timed: it ends when you drop off the bar.
- Push-upsAs many as you can in 2 minutes. Lower until your upper arms are at least parallel to the deck and press back to straight arms, keeping your body in a straight line. You may rest in the up position with your back flexed, but the event ends if you rest on the ground or lift a hand or foot.
- Forearm plankHold a straight line from head to heels on your forearms and toes, up to the 3:45 maximum. The event ends if anything but your toes, forearms and hands touches the floor, if a hand or foot comes up, or if you cannot keep the straight line.
- 3-mile runExactly 3 miles on a measured, reasonably level course, indoors or out. A treadmill is not allowed.
- 5,000-meter rowOn a Concept2 rower. Marines aged 46 and older may row instead of running; younger Marines may row only for an injury or after childbirth, with medical and command approval.

Marine Corps PFT questions
Should I do pull-ups or push-ups?
Push-ups top out at 70 points; only pull-ups can earn the full 100. A man aged 21 to 25 who does 15 pull-ups, holds the plank for 2:30 and runs 3 miles in 22:00 scores 218, 2nd Class. Swap the pull-ups for 87 push-ups, the most the table scores, and the same Marine scores 215.
Can one weak event fail the PFT?
Yes. Every event needs at least its minimum score, 40 points or 60 for women's pull-ups, whatever the total. A man aged 21 to 25 with 23 pull-ups and an 18:00 run still fails with a 0:30 plank, because the plank minimum is 1:10.
How does the combat arms standard work?
Since 1 January 2026, Marines in a combat arms PMOS are scored on the male tables for their age and must reach 210 points (MARADMIN 613/25). A pass below 210 stays a pass, but the Marine goes on remedial physical training and may face PMOS reclassification or promotion restriction. The message rules out adverse or punitive action until further guidance. For example, a woman aged 21 to 25 with 10 pull-ups, a 2:00 plank and a 24:30 run scores 233 on the female table, and 176 on the male table as a combat arms Marine.
What happens if I fail the PFT?
Under MCO 6100.13A a failure makes your fitness report adverse, lowers your proficiency marks and puts you on promotion restriction until you pass a PFT. Fail the same test again the next year and your command considers you for administrative separation. You may take more than one PFT in a season to raise your score, and your command records every official attempt.
Can I still do crunches?
No. MCO 6100.13A ended the abdominal crunch on 31 December 2022, so the forearm plank is the core event.
