Space Force HPA pass rule

Guardians take the HPA every six months. To pass:

  • Composite score75 or more out of 100.
  • Component minimumsYou need the minimum in every component.
  • Scoring chartsSet by age and sex.

The Space Force publishes the HPA rules but keeps the scoring charts and the component minimums in the HPA calculator in myFitness, so this page explains the test without scoring it. The rules are in SPFMAN 36-2905.

How the Space Force HPA is scored

The HPA has three components, and you do one event in each (listed below). Component scores are set by age and sex: cardiorespiratory fitness up to 60, muscular endurance up to 20 and muscular strength up to 20, for a total out of 100.

HPA categories

Your composite sets your category.

  • Fit to Fight90 to 100 points
  • Health Maintenance75 to 89.9 points
  • Health ConcernUnder 75 points. Also Health Concern when any component minimum is not met.

How the Space Force HPA is run

Before each HPA you complete the Fitness Screening Questionnaire. Then you take one event in each of the three components.

  • Muscular strengthPush-ups in 1 minute, or hand-release push-ups in 2 minutes.
  • Muscular enduranceSit-ups in 1 minute, the cross-leg reverse crunch in 2 minutes, or a timed forearm plank.
  • Cardiorespiratory fitnessThe 2-mile run or the 20-meter HAMR. Use the run for at least one of your two HPAs each year. If weather stops outdoor testing and no indoor track is available, you take the HAMR indoors.
  • 2-kilometer walkOnly if you are not medically cleared to run. Your composite then comes from the other components.

2-kilometer walk time limits

The walk is pass or fail and earns no points. Finish within the time for your age and sex.

Space Force body composition standard

Guardians are measured against this rule separately from the HPA.

  • Waist-to-height ratioA WHtR below 0.55 is the Space Force standard; 0.55 or above exceeds it. The ratio is truncated to two decimals and is not part of the HPA score.
  • How it is measuredWaist and height in like units (SPFMAN chapter 9 and Attachment 7). Ratio truncated to two decimals, for example 39.5 / 72 = 0.5486, recorded as 0.54.
  • At or over the lineA lab-grade body fat assessment (for example DEXA), or a 2-3 site tape method if none is available. Maximum 26.0% for men and 36.0% for women.

Space Force HPA questions

Where can I see the HPA scoring charts?

In the HPA calculator in myFitness, which you reach through myFSS. SPFMAN 36-2905 names that calculator the official home of the charts, so they are not printed in the manual.

How often do Guardians take the HPA?

Every six months, no sooner than five and no later than seven months after your last scored HPA. A Health Concern result brings you back in three months, as does a passing score with a component exemption or on the walk.

What is a Diagnostic HPA?

If you take every component together before the 16th of the month you are due, you may count the result as a Diagnostic HPA. It goes into myFitness without a score. You can log no more than three in 365 days.

Does my waist measurement count toward the HPA?

No. Body composition is not a scored part of the HPA. You are measured separately, against the waist-to-height ratio standard above.

Does the Space Force take the Air Force PFRA?

No. The Air Force manual, AFMAN 36-2905, does not apply to the Space Force. The Air Force test has its own PFRA scoring charts.
