How the Coast Guard PFT is scored
Each event scores from 100 down to 45 points in steps of 5, on tables set by sex and by 11 age groups. Each score also carries an evaluation category and mark.
- SuperiorMark 790 to 100
- ExcellentMark 675 to 85
- Above AverageMark 560 to 70
- AverageMark 445 to 55
- FailureMark 3 for one failed event, 2 for two, 1 for all three or a refusalBelow 45
To pass, a member needs at least the minimum score, 45 points, in each of the three events. Failing any one event fails the test. Direct Access converts each raw score to points and an evaluation mark from Appendices A and B and records the overall mark used on evaluations.
Coast Guard PFT standards for men aged 25 to 29
Shown for men aged 25 to 29 until you score a test; then it follows your sex and age group. For push-ups and the plank you need at least the figure shown; for the run, row and swim, the time shown or faster. The 450-meter swim is on the standards page.

How each Coast Guard PFT event is tested
You take all three events on the same day, in this order, with no more than 15 minutes of rest between them: push-ups, the forearm plank, then cardio.
- Push-upsAs many correct push-ups as you can in 1 minute. Not finishing the event scores 0 and fails the PFT.
- Forearm plankScored on how long you hold the forearm plank. Not finishing the event scores 0 and fails the PFT.
- CardioOne of four options: the 1.5-mile run or walk on a course or a treadmill, the 2,000-meter row, or the 500-yard or 450-meter swim. If you do not finish, you get 59:59 and fail the PFT.

Coast Guard PFT questions
What do I need to pass the Coast Guard PFT?
At least 45 points in each of the three events. There is no total to reach. A man aged 25 to 29 with 40 push-ups, a 2:00 plank and a 12:00 run scores 70, 65 and 65 points and passes. If he rows 2,000 meters in 9:31 instead of running, he fails, because 9:30 is the slowest row worth 45 points for his group.
How does the PFT show on my evaluation?
Direct Access turns each raw score into points, a category and an evaluation mark from Appendices A and B of COMDTINST 6100.1. A failed PFT gives a mark of 3 for one failed event, 2 for two and 1 for all three or a refusal. Passing later to regain compliance gives a mark of 4.
Can I retake a failed PFT?
Yes, once. Ask a unit PRL in writing within 24 hours of the failed test, and take the retake 30 to 60 days later. You cannot retake a test you passed to raise your score.
How often do members take the PFT?
Active component members, and reserve members on long-term active duty orders, test twice a year. Selected Reserve members test once a year. The Coast Guard processes members who stay non-compliant for three cycles in a row for separation.
Does the PFT include a body composition check?
No. Body composition is a separate program under COMDTINST 1020.8I, and the Coast Guard has not adopted the waist-to-height ratio the other services now use.
