Last verified against each branch's own promotion and fitness documents, listed under Sources.
Two branches turn your fitness score into promotion standing. The Army publishes a fixed table: the AFT is worth up to 120 points toward sergeant and staff sergeant. The Marine Corps counts the PFT and CFT as a quarter of the score that ranks junior Marines, as percentiles rather than fixed points. In the Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard and Space Force documents we checked, no table turns a score into promotion points: a failed test can block or hold up a promotion instead.

- ArmyArmy AFT promotion points calculatorTable 3-4 of AR 600-8-19 turns an AFT total of 300 to 500 into 1 to 120 of the 800 promotion points toward sergeant and staff sergeant. Enter your AFT total to look up yours.
- Marine CorpsHow the PFT and CFT affect Marine Corps promotionThe PFT and CFT together make up a quarter of the JEPES score (the Junior Enlisted Performance Evaluation System, which ranks Marines for promotion to corporal and sergeant), counted as percentiles against Marines of the same rank. The Marine Corps updates those tables every year, so no fixed conversion exists.
- NavyHow the Navy PFA affects advancementA Sailor who failed the most recent PFA cannot advance, be promoted or be frocked (allowed to pin on the next rank early) until a later official test is passed. Fitness reports and evaluations now carry more PFA detail.
- Air ForceHow the Air Force fitness assessment affects promotionA failed or out-of-date assessment on the promotion eligibility cutoff date (for airman through senior airman, the projected promotion date) makes an Airman ineligible. It adds nothing to the Weighted Airman Promotion System (WAPS) score that ranks Airmen for promotion.
- Coast GuardHow the Coast Guard PFT affects advancementThe score goes on your evaluation. A non-compliant member can still compete for advancement but cannot be frocked.
- Space ForceSpace Force HPA rules and standardsThe Human Performance Assessment (HPA) adds no promotion points. After a failed HPA, a commander may defer or withhold a promotion, one of several optional actions in SPFMAN 36-2905.
The Department of War rule on fitness and promotion
The Department of War’s fitness instruction, DoWI 1308.03 of 31 August 2026, sets the floor for the five Department of War services. It says that failing to meet fitness standards may result in the withholding of favorable personnel actions, including promotions, and that continued failure leads to administrative measures up to processing for administrative separation. Each of those services writes its own rules on top, and the Coast Guard sets its own in COMDTINST 6100.1, which is why the six rows above differ.
