Navy PRT standards by sex and age group
Choose a sex and an age group to see that group's table. These are the standards for tests below 5,000 feet (Table 4-1); tests above 5,000 feet use Table 4-2, which is not shown here. To score your own results, use the Navy PRT calculator.
Push-ups and forearm plank for men aged 25 to 29
The minimum for each level. Do at least the number of push-ups shown, and hold the plank at least as long as the time shown. Probationary, the bottom row, is the lowest pass.

Cardio options for men aged 25 to 29
You take one of these. Finish in the time shown or faster to reach that level. Table 4-1 has no column for the treadmill or the stationary bike; the official PFA app scores the bike by bike model and calories.

How the Navy PRT is scored
Each event earns a level and a point value from the table for your sex and age group. The table has 12 levels, from Outstanding High at 100 points down to Probationary at 45. Probationary is the lowest passing level, and anything below it is a Failure.
- OutstandingHigh, Medium and Low100, 95, 90
- ExcellentHigh, Medium and Low85, 80, 75
- GoodHigh, Medium and Low70, 65, 60
- SatisfactoryHigh and Medium55, 50
- ProbationaryOne level, the lowest pass45
- FailureBelow the Probationary standardNone
You pass the PRT when push-ups, the forearm plank and your cardio event each score Probationary (45 points) or better. Score below Probationary in any one event and Guide-5A calls it a Failure, which fails the whole PRT. Your overall category matches the average of your event points.
How each Navy PRT event is tested
You take all three events on one day, in this order: push-ups, the forearm plank, then cardio, with 5 to 15 minutes between each. Cardio is the 1.5-mile run unless your commanding officer approves an alternate: the 2,000-meter row, the 500-yard or 450-meter swim, a treadmill or a stationary bike.
- Push-upsDo as many correct push-ups as you can in 2 minutes, lowering until your arms bend to at least 90 degrees. You may rest only in the up position. The event ends if anything but your hands and feet touches the deck, if a hand or foot comes off it, or if your body stops being straight.
- Forearm plankHold a straight line from head to heels on your forearms and toes, with your elbows under your shoulders at 90 degrees. The event ends at the maximum time (3:24 for men, 3:14 for women), when another part of your body touches the deck, when you lift a hand, forearm or foot, or on a third form correction.
- 1.5-mile runRun, walk or mix the two on a flat track or outdoor course. If you cut the course short or stop for any reason other than injury, your fitness leader records 59:59, a failing time.
- 2,000-meter rowYou row on a Concept2 rower and set the damper before you start. Keep rowing until the monitor reaches 0 meters: if you stop long enough for the monitor to turn off, the row counts as a failure.
- 500-yard or 450-meter swimSwim in a 25 or 50 yard or meter pool with any stroke, starting in the water with no dive. You may rest by holding the side, standing or treading water.
- Treadmill and stationary bikeOn the treadmill you cover 1.5 miles at a fixed 1.0 percent incline, timed by stopwatch. The bike test lasts 12 minutes and counts the calories the console shows at the 12-minute mark.
Navy body composition standard
The Physical Fitness Assessment (PFA) has two parts: the Body Composition Assessment and the PRT. This is the body composition rule.
- Waist-to-height ratioStep 1: a WHtR of 0.5499 or less is within standards. The ratio is rounded down to four decimals, so 0.5500 or more moves the Sailor to step 2, the body fat estimate.
- How it is measuredWaist at the umbilicus (belly button). Waist rounded down to the nearest half inch; height rounded up to the nearest half inch.
- At or over the lineBody fat estimate from Guide-4 Tables 2 and 3 (height minus waist, and weight). Maximum 26% for men and 36% for women.
Navy PRT standards questions
Is Probationary a pass on the Navy PRT?
Yes. Guide-5A names Probationary as the lowest passing category.
Is the PRT the same as the PFA?
No. The Physical Fitness Assessment (PFA) has two parts: the Body Composition Assessment and the PRT. The tables on this page score the PRT.
What happens if I fail one event?
The whole PRT counts as a failure, even if your other two events score Outstanding. Since 1 January 2026, Sailors with PFA failures face administrative actions, and FITREPs and EVALs carry more PFA detail. NAVADMIN 264/25 reset failures from before 2026 to zero for reenlistment, advancement, promotion and continuation decisions.
What if a medical waiver excuses me from an event?
You can still pass. Guide-5A records a Sailor who passes the events they take, with a medical waiver for the rest, as a Partial-Pass.
How often do Sailors take the PFA?
Active Component Sailors take two a year and Reserve Component Sailors at least one. NAVADMIN 264/25 sets the 2026 cycles at 1 January to 30 June and 1 July to 31 December.
